SOLANA HATED SCHOOL. And not because she didn't want to do the work, it was the people that made her six hours of learning feel like hell. She wondered the halls during lunch time, trying her best to avoid going to lunch.

"Solana?" A voice made her turn around. Her fifth grade teacher, Miss Rosario, stood outside her classroom door, teachers key in hand, as she stared at her. "What are you doing here? You should be down in the cafeteria."

"Um..." Solana looked around awkwardly, trying to come up with a believable excuse as to why she wouldn't want to be socializing in a loud room with other people. "I don't know." Great going, Solana. She internally facepalmed herself.

"Here, I'll take you down there." Miss Rosario outstretched her hand, waiting for Solana to take it- which she eventually did. They walked together in silence, the only sound coming from the clicking of heels as they treaded down the hallways, then the stairs. They eventually reached the cafeteria doors and Miss Rosario opened it, leading her inside. "Here we are."

Solana's ears were overcome with shouting and screaming from giddy children. In truth, she wouldn't be half as nervous if it weren't for the fact that she was unable to spot her best friend at their usual cafeteria table. She saw her earlier but now she was gone, just her luck.

"Hey, Solana!"

There it was, what she had been dreading all day- all weekend in fact. Solana hesitantly turned to the person that called her name. Veronica Carmichael. She sat in her glorious high-class skirt and pearl necklace.

"Oh, there are your friends. Go on, go sit with them." Miss Rosario urged her student over to the table before turning around and leaving.

Solana tried to turn around and leave too but Veronica got up from her seat and stood in front of her. "Where are you going? Didn't you hear Miss Rosario? We're friends. Come sit with us." She grabbed her hand and dragged her back to the table where Solana hesitantly took a seat.

She looked around to try and spot her friend but the table was empty she was gone and she was all alone again.

"Oh, hey. Where'd you get that jacket?" Veronica pointed towards the large varsity jacket draped across Solana's shoulders. It belonged to her brother, Alejandro, and knowing the fact that his little sister thought it was cool, gave it to her her to wear to school as long as she didn't get it dirty. "It looks like my dads back when he thought they were cool."

Her voice was innocent but her words made Solana flinch. She thought it was very cool. But she stayed silent, trying to get her mind off the insult.

"Why don't you talk? You're so quiet." One of Veronica's friends, Chelsea, asked. "How do you expect to make friends if you don't speak?" When Solana gave no reaction, she waved her hands in front of her face. "Hello?" she turned to her friends. "Is she mute or something?"

"No." Solana answered quietly. She didn't what else to do, or say, or how to leave.

"Hey I think there's something in you hair." Veronica patted the back of Solana's hair before messing with it. She eventually took her hands out with a fake surprises expression. "Oh my God! I swear I didn't even mean to but there's gum in your hair."

Solana frantically grabbed locks of her brown hair and looked at it, finding chewed up pink gum sitting there intertwined in her hair. Her eyes got wet but she refused to cry, not in front of these girls, never in front of these girls. She got up and ran out of the cafeteria, the last thing she heard being snickers of amusement.
