He was born in a martial artist family. With his father being successor to a forbidden type of martial art, his mother who is born in a family that is an expert in Japanese tea ceremony. As his father went to buy milk and never came back, he was left with his mother and his older sister, Yan Fei. His family later opens a shop that sells potions, herbs and magic items. The shop's business was not great, until Yan Lin joins the organization, the FREAKS, the business slowly grows.
Yan Lin has black hair, blue eyes and three sakura petal like marks behind his neck. The ribbon he uses to tie around head has a code behind it, teaching people how to use the forbidden martial art but as Yan Lin is quite an idiot, he can't read the code until Nathan found out what the code means and learnt how to use the martial art.
