Max shifted uncomfortably when she finally
heard my unwavering tone.

——

"And that was the last we ever saw her. After that,
she was just, gone. I can't believe it's been that
long, it feels like yesterday." Lucas finished the story, and I felt pretty sad just thinking about El.

Max nodded, a concentrated frown on her face.
"Yeah, I mean, I bet." she said. "Wow."

Lucas nodded again, a sense of relief washing over us at how seriously she was taking it.

She had, for the most part, remained silent during the story. She didn't show any effort to hide her confusion but seemed to go along with it.

"It's crazy, I know." I let out a breath.

"It's crazy, but," she shrugged. "I really liked it."

It was our turn to be confused. "You liked it?" Lucas asked.

"Yeah," she frowned slightly, a tight smile on her
face. "Well, I mean, I had a few issues?"

"Issues?" I repeated, baffled.

"I just felt it was a little derivative at some parts."

Lucas was flabbergasted, and my high hopes came
crashing down to the ground.

"What are you talking about." Lucas shook his head slowly.

She shrugged simply, tucking her palms in her lap
as she looked at him with irritation.

"I just wish it had a little more originality, is all."

I leaned forward, a frown etched into my brows.
"You don't believe us?"

Max chortled and gave me a pathetic glance.
Her voice began to rise steadily, her own anger
taking over her false intrigue. "Y/n, come on, seriously? How gullible do you guys think I am?"

"Why would we make this up?" Lucas shot back.

"I don't know! To impress Y/n, or something? Or,
you're just like, insane."

"We tell you all of this," Lucas declares hotly, rising
to his feet. "I mean, top-secret stuff, risking our
lives," he gestured to the two of us. "And this is how you react?"

Max scoffed, still not allowing herself the
possibility of believing what we had told her.

Instead, Max looked at him with an amused expression painted on her face." Risking your lives?'"

The frustration festered inside of Lucas at the
girl's unwavering amusement at the traumatic
experience.

"Oh, so this is funny to you?"

"Yeah, I mean, kinda funny?"

Lucas only glared at her, and a smug smile finds
its way onto her face as she rises to her feet.
"Stupid, but funny."

Shrugging him and the properly burrowed feeling
of fear off her shoulders, she waltzed towards the
door, her board in hand.
