35:We need to go!

Start from the beginning

"Apology accepted. You may know more than me but there is nothing like a mother's instincts, my mother always knew even when she acted like she didn't, she knew."

"She knew about us?"

"Long before I told her about you, she knew from the way I walked into the house smiling. So next time, trust me, trust that I have your best interests at heart."

"I will trust you." A peck on his forehead and he already wants to undress me.

When we get back to Norfolk, I ask Kai to drop me off at my parent's house.

"Papa!" He comes out to see me.

"Ngwanaka wa ngwanana" I run into his open arms.
[Translation: My baby girl.]

"I missed you so much." The more I am away from him, the more I realise how much time I do not spend with him.

We sit down and start talking, I tell him all about the Germany fiasco and he listens to me like he always does.

"But one good thing that came out of the entire ordeal is that I realised what I want to do to University."

"Really?" I nod, my mom always wanted me to go to university, to get my degree and to get that was the most important thing.

"So what are you going to do?"

"Bcom in Business management."

"Same as me!"

"Didn't I tell you that you are my role model?" I can see the tears in his eyes

"You are going to make me cry."

"Don't cry now, you can cry after I leave." Wrapping my arms around him. "Times like these I miss mama."

"I miss her every day but there are days when I forget that she is gone."

"It's going to be okay, she would say don't be said that they are gone, be glad that they were there."

"She loved being motivational."

"Always had something soothing to say."

"She had a way with words."

"Should have become a poet."

"I always told her that but she would say 'Thabo, black women are not poets, what poem have you read that was written by a black woman?' our school system failed her in that regard."

"I guess that's why she always told me that the sky is big enough for every star."

"She believed it about everyone but herself, there were times before you were born where she thought she had to give in order to get. It took me a long time to convince her to stay at home and let me take care of her."

"Really?"

"Your mother was adamant about working, even though she hated it."

"Yeah, she would have hated working."

"She is a hard worker but she can not take orders from no one."

"That's mama."

"And you."

"Me?"

"Yes, you. You hate being told what to do, you would be a terrible employee but a wonderful employer."

"Maybe I might open up my own business."

"I will be your first customer."

"You are going to be my brand ambassador."

"Ah, I see what you are doing."

I enjoyed the rest of the day with my dad, even called Kai to come over with Khanyi so we could all spend time with my dad, we even slept over.

"I was talking to my dad earlier on and I was telling him that I want to go back to university."

"Really?"

"Yeah, I think I took my time, I spent tons of time with Khanyi, and I think I am ready to be selfish again."

"When do you plan on going back?"

"Next year."

"Okay. I support you in everything you want you just tell me what you need and I will get it for you."

"Thank you, baby, going to need tons of your support with studying and all."

"Anything for my baby."

We spent the rest of the year waiting for my acceptance letter which finally arrived two days before Khanyi's first birthday.
