"Mary is dead."
The phone vibrated constantly as a video chat kept persisting on Michelle's screen. Her hands tremoring in the light, she tapped the green button, and started to display the tragedy that had unfolded.
"Oh god," screamed Tara, shuddering under her breath from the cool wind of death wading over her.
"Why her? She didn't do anything wrong! She was a nice person, damnit." Buck yelled, clutching his arms and rocking himself in an unviable attempt to calm himself.
Another joined in. "Like hell am I letting this guy get away with this."
Everyone agreed. From that day onward, they vowed to solve the murder of the girl they had known so well.
Despite the situation at hand, no-one dared to go out on their own anymore. Mary was stabbed in the throat, in her own home, there was no way of predicting who would next. Over the next few days, everyone spent time collecting any evidence they could, talking to the neighbours at 16 and 18 (being popular sure does help in times like this), except there was one key piece of information that hadn't been placed in the lock yet.
As Buck and Michelle began to sneak into the house of their late friend, her silenced phone dinged. This time a different tone, but a ding all the same.
"Hello there, please select one of the following numbers; 1) 2251832974 | 2) 2250915739 | 3) 2251677256 | 4) 4717912863"
Having stalked the group chat the day of the first message, a look of despair fell upon his face. Michelle noticed this, and panicked even more. With a heart racing faster than a starving man to a food platter, she set the phone in her purse and entered the tape-covered door. A pool of blood leaked by his foot, and he almost squealed in dread. The realisation finally sunk in on what had happened. Michelle, being a 2nd year student of criminal pathology studied the blood spatters closely.
"Pattern suggests she was stabbed and most likely slit near her jugular vein. Lack of blood also tells me that this was a professional hit, potentially a backup due to gunshot residue on the walls. Probably dead by the time the police show-" her analysis was cut off by an off-beat vibration.
"Please select a number."
