Scout giggled and smiled. It looked like he said something but Carson was too distracted sitting there, mesmerized by that lovely sound. He snapped out of his trance and held up a thumbs up, hoping it was a thumbs up kinda statement. Scout giggled yet again and turned the rest of his attention to the road.
Carson let a small smile creep onto his lips as he enjoyed the rest of the car ride.
~~~
They had arrived and taken out all of their things from the car.
Scout was currently looking around at the lush forest in awe. A wide smile spread across his face at the prospect of exploring it.
Carson on the other hand was apprehensive.
He liked being outdoors but being the busy scientist he was he didn't have time for it and never got the chance.
He also was allergy-prone which caused multiple problems.
In the end, it was too much work to go outside and hike. This was a once in a while sort of thing and he was scared he would mess things up with the other boy. He had already made one mistake today, and he wasn't going to make another.
Scout, who was unaware of his inner dialogue, smiled as he exhaled deeply, taking in the smells of the forest.
"Ah, isn't this lovely?" He said rhetorically more to himself than Carson.
He seemed to take in the sky and the breeze
"We should put on some sunscreen, it looks too hot to not wear it."
Carson smiled, a smart boy who doesn't want his skin to be destroyed by the sun.
Who doesn't find that attractive?
He pulled a few different bottles of various sunscreen brands out of his huge hiking backpack and handed a few over to Carson with a smile.
The other took them graciously, a little embarrassed he forgot to bring his own on the trip.
The boys both began applying the sunscreen to themselves.
It was silent as they worked. It was a comfortable silence, one of focus and tranquility.
The birds were chirping pleasantly in the background and the wind blew the trees in such a relaxing way that Carson had trouble suppressing the smile that graced his lips. He shifted his gaze to his hiking buddy.
The smaller boy was putting sunscreen on his freckled arms, his face showed deep concentration. His tongue was sticking out the side of his mouth subconsciously.
Carson had to force himself not to pull out his phone to capture this adorable moment for himself. Scout seemed to feel his gaze and looked up at him. He flushed when he saw the other was looking at him with a dazed smile. Carson, who was just, if not more, embarrassed looked away from him
"Sorry." He said bashfully. Scout smiled and shrugged,
"It's fine, I don't mind."
After a few minutes, Scout finished applying the sunscreen.
He then gave Carson an inquisitive look and started moving closer to him raising his arm as he did. The scientist smiled and tried to play cool but on the inside, he was screaming, his heart pounding at a million miles per hour.
Scout moved even closer to him so that their faces were parallel.
He got close enough to the point Carson could count his long dark eyelashes.
They stared into each other's eyes for a moment.
Dark brown irises meet cherry pink ones.
Carson's heart seemed to swell and he worried for a moment the other could hear the pounding of the organ. Scout looked at him with concentration as he moved even closer.
