I looked before me at the city with cool air on my face. As spectacular as the city was at night, at dawn it was even more so. Granted, it was all fake, but when one is on leave you tend not to complain.
I heard a commotion on the street below me. An Unggoy and a Kig-Yar were scuffling over a few credits that had been dropped on the ground.
"Rkne, come take a look at this," I chuckled. From our second story window, we had a fantastic view of the fight. I looked around and noticed we were not the only ones watching, too. The pack of Jiralhanae tasked with guarding this street also stood there, watching.
Looking back down at the fight, I saw that the Unggoy had thrown off the Kig-Yar. In response, the Kig-Yar drew a small energy blade and began to circle the Unggoy.
"Suddenly this seems less enjoyable to watch," I noticed, my smile fading. The pack guarding the street stood there, smirks across their faces.
"They are not going to stop the Kig-Yar," Rkne pointed out.
"Then we will," I said as I leaped over the railing of the second story and to the ground.
A thud behind me confirmed that Rkne had followed. I quickly placed myself in between the two fighters, just as the jackal was lunging. Grabbing him by the throat, his energy blade came down on my armor and sliced through my skin.
"Back away, jackal," I cursed.
His hissed at me and continued flailing. Raising him up some more, I threw him back a good distance. Approaching him once again, he scrambled backwards.
"This Unggoy has won the money fair and square. Be gone," I commanded.
The Kig-Yar turned and fled after looking over my shoulder and seeing Rkne helping the Unggoy.
The grateful Unggoy gave us his thanks just as the Jiralhanae pack approached us.
"Noble Sangheili, you are injured," the pack leader snarled.
"I am aware. Now, tell me why you did not intercede as is your duty?" I questioned him.
To question a pack leader in those days was common practice amongst Sangheili. The simple reasons were that we were higher ranked and seen as more valuable. So we thought at the time, that is. In truth, however, our species found it incredibly difficult to mix. The humans had named them "brutes" and even that, debatably, was an understatement.
"We were placed here with the orders of guarding this stre-" he started.
"And keeping the peace. I understand enjoying a fight, but as soon as it turns deadly you have an obligation to keep the people safe from harm," I interrupted.
He narrowed his eyes and bared his teeth. He stood at least half a foot over myself and I still held my ground.
"As you wish, Sangheili," he scowled. I noticed he dropped the "Noble".
Rkne grabbed my shoulder and held up my arm.
"Come, I saw a medical facility nearby. We can head there before service today," he ushered me away.
"Who would have known I would need energy shields in our holiest of cities?" I belted, hoping the Brutes would here me.
"Do you want to end up as their next meal?" Rkne asked with a chuckle.
"They would only try," I stated plainly.
We headed down the street, took a slight turn and arrived at the medical facility.
"I wonder what the facilities look like on the eastern side of the city" I remarked, noticing that the facility here in the west was little more than subpar.
Entering, Rkne and I approached the counter where a young Unggoy sat behind a desk.
"Need healing, great one?" he piped.
"Yes, that would be much appreciated," I breathed.
"Room seven on the right hand side. Your friend can wait out here," he instructed.
"I will keep an eye out for that Kig-Yar, he will want a shot at some payback," Rkne smiled.
"Do not die. I would hate to put your squad under Mewh's command," I said.
"You would not do that," he gaped.
Smiling, I turned and headed to the room.
