As it turned out - as things so often did when under the command of the US Army - neither Katrina nor Bucky had any say in letting each other go.

They got a few days, sure. Quiet, stolen moments sat side by side on his cot in the infirmary tent - fingers linked as his pulse was taken, lingering looks as she checked those breathtakingly blue eyes for any sign of concussion (far more times than was necessary, in truth) before it became too obvious that he was well enough to give the bed up to someone who needed it more. Before the other nurses began to notice that Bucky sat up a little too quickly when Kat passed by, feigning some bothersome pain in order to get her close enough to steal a kiss. After that, Kat needed to try a little harder to see him between her duties to the other injured men of the 107th who had been brought in, along with those still being shipped in from the front lines in a constant barrage of blood and trauma. She could cope with it though, no longer with the numb determination that had encompassed her body before. She could feel her heart beat in her chest again, because she knew his was beating too, somewhere nearby, just across the camp, in some other khaki tent surrounded by the others that Steve Rogers had rescued from the prisoner of war camp.

That was where she often found herself, in those few days after his arrival - when her shift had finished and it felt as if her very bones were screaming at her to lie down, that was when she stole over to his quarters for a few, precious moments, before anyone realised she was missing. Sometimes he met her at the rolled-up doorway, that easy, cocksure smile tugging at his lips when the other guys were around to playfully goad him at her arrival. There was no harm in them though, she found that swiftly enough when Bucky had tucked her under his arm and introduced her, letting her put faces to the names she recognised from his letters. Sometimes it was just Steve with him, and then his smile would be softer, his guard lowered a little even as his ears turned bright pink as his best friend regailed Kat with stories of their childhood and the trouble they got into - with Bucky usually managing to get them out.
