Unsurprisingly, he had screwed it up.
He hadn't intended to, of course. If anything, Bucky had done everything he could to try and do right by her, by Kat. He had done everything he could to make sure she would be alright, that she would be safe.

Still, it seemed like every move he had made to try and ensure her safety had been a move that pushed her further from his reach. Perhaps there was some underlying point there that he didn't want to look too closely at, perhaps he wasn't safe to be around. Perhaps she was better off far, far away from him.

It didn't stop him feeling like he'd screwed up though. Screwed wasn't a harsh enough word for it. He'd royally fucked this up, just like every other aspect of his wretched life.

It shouldn't have come as a surprise at all.

He'd tried though. He really had tried. After cradling the girl he had crossed continents for in his arms on the cold concrete floor of the lab in Siberia, he had managed to bundle her up and carry her out to the all-terrian truck he had hired for the journey. He had nestled her in the passenger seat, unwilling to release her from his hold when she had still felt so small, so desperately vulnerable. Still, he had pressed on, mumbling comforting nonsense as he had taken the driver's seat, promising that he was going to get her far away from this place, promising that she could rest as he cranked the heat in the cabin to its highest level.
