"...But I've never... wished to hypnotize anyone..." (Lainie)

Confused, Lainie shook her head side to side. Upon seeing this, I held up a finger.

"I have a theory about that. You had a reason to interfere with my mind." (Anis)

"A reason?" (Lainie)

"Lainie, I'm going to be blunt. What was the happiest time in your life?" (Anis)

Lainie looked puzzled by my question. After some hesitation, she tells me in a slightly pained voice.

"It was when... my mother was alive..." (Lainie)

"I'm assuming that you're not talking about current mom, but rather your birthmother?" (Anis)

"Yes. I believe those days were the happiest times of my life." (Lainie)

"Then, have you ever been happy after the fact?" (Anis)

"...No..." (Lainie)

She lost her mother but still had to live. Then came her real father who adopted her, starting her life as an aristocrat. Her father raised her in the ways of nobles, but Lainie was just a commoner before that. What could she have thought? Seeing her reaction, it's hard to say it was anything positive.

Someone who originally lived as a commoner, was thrust into the nobility. Suddenly, she required strict education, had restricted freedom, and was expected to behave like a noble. While some do yearn for the glittering life of nobility seeing it as happiness, that wasn't the case for Lainie.

"You were not happy. In other words, you were very stressed. That's why you unconsciously wished for hypnosis. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that your vampiric magic is instinctual. That's why it activated without your will." (Anis)

"Stress? Is that a reason?" (Lainie)

"When you're stressed, your body reacts. When you feel tired and don't want to move, it's an instinctual reaction. In other words, we can assume that your hypnosis was an instinctual self-preservation technique. You unconsciously began using charms so people would treat you nicely, thus avoiding their hate. However, it isn't easy to control. Though you can easily activate the charm, controlling it is like rolling a die. With that lack of control, it's only natural that some might be charmed in the opposite direction." (Anis)

Euphie and Ilia nodded in agreement with my explanation. In other words, Lainie's situation wasn't her fault, and thus she bears no responsibility. If we were to blame her, we'd have to blame her birth, and I can't agree with that.

The fact that Lainie charmed someone is only the result of her instincts working to protect her. The problem is that no one knew. Ignorance is the only reason for the lack of a solution. No one knew it was the work of vampirism, nor did anyone even realize vampires were real.

"I think it was Euphie's mentality and values that made the charm seem ineffective, or rather ineffective on her." (Anis)

"That's... probably true, if you ask me." (Euphie)

Once her emotions hit a certain point, Euphie flatlines them. It's just a habit, a trained instinct, as of now. She learned to quickly flatline her emotions to serve her role as queen.

That's why Euphie is neutral towards Lainie. Because of her instincts, she stays neutral and attempts to fulfill her role. It's... something that's out of sync with her surroundings. Not everyone has as much self-control as Euphie.

"I think the reason Euphie was confronted by those around her was because both Euphie's self-control and Lainie's hypnosis heavily affected those around them. In an academy full of immature kids, it's the worst combination ever, hurting them both." (Anis)
