I drove to the hospital in a daze. I had typed in the address into my car's GPS. In about twenty minutes I had reached it. What was I really doing here?
I mean - I didn't even know the guy! I sighed and got out of my car. I walked through the emergency room entrance. The woman at the counter glanced up as I opened the door.
"Can I help you?" she asked. Before I could say anything -
"She's with the boy who just came in." it was the same cop I had talked to on the bridge.
"Your friend will be unconscious for another half an hour." he said to me. I didn't have the energy to correct him. Tristan Hunter was never my 'friend.' I nodded.
"We still haven't been able to get in touch with his parents." the officer frowned and said. Then he walked away. Leaving me sitting in the waiting room - waiting for Tristan to wake up.
I stared at the ceiling for a while. Then at my phone for a while longer. Then it rang. I frowned and looked at the caller ID. Mom. Crap! I was supposed to get the cake! I answered quickly.
"Hi." I said slowly.
"Hi honey, did you pick up the cake?" she asked me cheerfully.
"Not exactly -" I paused. "Something happened, and someone got hurt - and anyway I'm at the hospital." I explained the story. It took a while. I was shaking by the end of it. It didn't seem real.
"Oh dear." mom sounded worry. "Is the boy okay?" she asked.
"For now." I whispered.
"Anyways - I don't think I'm supposed to be on the phone right now - I have to go." I lied. I didn't want to talk to my mom right now.
"Of course sweetie, well, let me know if anything happens." she said. I agreed and we both hung up. I sat back and just stared. Was this really happening? Like really?
"Excuse me." a doctor said, snapping me out of my daze.
"Yes." I said, alertly.
"Are you with," he paused and looked at his clipboard. "Tristan Hunter?" he finished. I nodded.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"Hannah Avery." I said slowly. He nodded and wrote it down.
"The patient has woken up, and while it is procedure for him to see his family first - taking into consideration the fact that we have not been able to contact his family and taking into account the seriousness of his condition, I think it will be best for him to see a familiar face." he paused and looked at me. "From what I understand, you are a friend?" he asked. I nodded - despite my growing annoyance at the false term. He gestured for me to follow. He led to me to a room. I heard a beeping sound - and then saw Tristan.
He turned his head slowly.
He frowned at me. I looked at the doctor.
"I'll be back in a few minutes." he said and walked away.
"Hi." I said - unsure of what I should be saying to him. He didn't say anything.
"Why did you do it?" I asked quietly.
"I didn't do anything." he smiled weakly. "Last time I checked, I didn't have the balls to jump off." he finished. I rolled my eyes and let out an angry breath.
"Okay, well your parents aren't answering their phone or anything." I said. Now he let out an angry breath.
"What?" I asked.
"Nothing." he said quickly.
"Do you wan't to give me your brother's or sister's cell phone number? I could tell them to tell your parents." I offered. He shook his head slowly. I frowned.
