Chapter 12- Started With A Note

Start from the beginning

I sigh. He wasn't that great of a lier. I pulled out two pictures that had been neatly tucked in my back pocket. Damn! He wants it the hard way. "You sure about that?" I ask, placing it on the note book.

In the picture were the two guys that had tried breaking in to the apartment the other day. Yesterday, I had stumbled upon an insider information that Stanley had an argument with the two of them, few minutes before the accident. The car which had also hit him belonged to these guys which had seemed greatly suspicious.

"Why are you doing this? What do you want from me? Do you also wanna threaten me like they did?" I was taken aback by his sudden burst out.

"You know something that I don't and yeah I had a feeling they must have been here."

"You don't know what's it like. They almost fucking killed me a second time here in the hospital."

"Why?"

"Please I need you to stop asking. My family's life depends on me and I won't do anything to jeopardize it."

"I see. They also went for the people closest to you, a very smart move. Why though?"

"It's best you don't know and besides what is it to you?"

"These guys are out to get Manchester and I need to be sure the kind of people I'm dealing with before I go after them."

He arched his eyebrow in surprise, "I thought you didn't like her."

"That's what she told you?"

"That's what I perceived."

"Same difference. The point is, this people took a life, I mean lives few years back just the same way they are going about it now and it would kill me to allow them slip from my hands. Again."

"I'm sorry..."

I waited for him to say something, anything. But his lips were tightly sealed. I let out a frustrated sigh.

"Okay let's do this, since you are being a coward, I will ask questions and all you need to answer is yes or no."

"I am not being a coward, I'm being reasonable."

"Are you friends with these guys?" I asked, ignoring his tantrums.

"No."

"Are you comfortable with Manchester getting killed, just because you are scared?"

"What sought of question is that?"

"Are you?"

"Hell no!"

"Then fucking tell me what you saw or heard that day for them to have come after you."

"The truth is..." He paused, trying to steady his breathing, "everything still feels hazy. I can't seem to remember the important part but I knew they were plotting to kidnap Manchester that night at the freshman party and I happen to stumble upon the information.

"They came after me because I threatened to let Manchester know their plan."

"That was a foolish thing to do."

"I was angry and we say things when we are angry," he said in his defense.

True, but that was still foolish, don't you watch movies where those kind of threats never go unpunished? I was tempted to say all this but let it slide. The guy's ego has been bruised a couple of times within few minutes already.

"If you say everything feels hazy, how come you remember this much or is there something else?"

"Yeah. There was a third person."

Now that got my ears perked up.

"Who?"

"I don't know, that's where I go blank every time I think about it."

"How are you sure there was a third person."

"She mentioned my name immediately I stepped into the room to confront what I heard them and to see who they were."

"So this third person is someone you know and it's a female." I said more to myself.

This just confirms that the guys weren't alone, they are working for someone.

"Can you do me a favor and keep this away from Manchester?"

"Why? I feel she should know and also be at alert, hell I should have told her."

"Don't worry about that. She's covered."

"How?"

"Like I said do not worry your head about that. Focus on getting better and remembering that face." I said reassuringly. "By the way, thanks for being honest."

He smiled in response. Amidst all that gothic look, the guy actually had a pretty smile.

Already planning the next move, I needed to step out and make some calls..

"I don't know why but something tells me this person might be closer than we think." His words stopped me before I could turn around and leave.

"Hey look who I met on my way back." Manchester cut in before I could respond. She paused amid strides, assessing I and Stanley with mouth slightly agape.

"No need to make such a big deal about it Chester," a voice called from behind her.

"I thought you two were never going to speak to each other. This is some miracle." She said ignoring the owner of the voice and gesturing at the both of us.

I made a huge show of rolling my eyes.

"Who is that? Let me see," the person said, nudging her aside. It was Blessing. "Oh hi," she greeted.

I simply nodded in response.

"See when you are just coming to visit me," Stanley said, faking a pained expression.

"I'm so sorry, but I had family emergency that same day so I had to take the first flight going to Abuja the next day, I just returned and the first thing I did was to come see you."

"Awww that's so sweet. Hope you brought back goodies to compensate for your absence."

"Trust me on that..." I tuned out their discussion thinking about what Stanley had said.

The person might be closer than we think.
