***Judging Rubric and some tips***

Start from the beginning

2. Are there books with similar plots, covers, or characters?

3. What can be added to make the plot more unique?

Plot and character development (20 points):

1. Does the plot have a main goal? (e.g. accomplishing something)

2. Does the character have no flaws? This should never happen; every character, like humans, have flaws.

3. At the end of each chapter, is the reader still going to continue? This can be done with cliffhangers (see Tips below)

4. Does the plot build up to the climax? There must be no hurried parts of the story or a rushed goal achievement.

5. Is the reader emotionally connected to the story through the character? (e.g. the reader is angry when the character is bullied, sad when the character's father dies)

Vocabulary and Mechanics (20 points):

1. Does the author use a wide range of words?

2. Are sentences structured correctly?

3. Are there any typos or spelling mistakes?

4. Are homophones mixed up? (e.g. here and hear, paws and pause, your and you're)

5. Is the punctuation used correctly?

Overall Enjoyment (5 points):

1. Was the book entertaining?

2. Does it make you want to read more?

3. What is one thing you enjoyed/did not really like?

4. What can be improved/removed/added?

Tips:

Oops! This image does not follow our content guidelines. To continue publishing, please remove it or upload a different image.

Tips:

1. Read more often; this helps you to improve your writing style and vocabulary

2. Check your chapter before you publish it; words that are underlined in red are often misspelt or two words are joined together

3. Use the same tenses. If a book is in past tense, yet the author uses 'I say', the tense is wrong.

Points scale:

Deducting 1-2 points mean there was a mistake or two

Deducting 3-4 points mean there were a few mistakes

Deducting 5-9 points mean that there were a lot of mistakes

Deducting 10-12 points mean that there were many mistakes

Deducting 13 or more points mean there were many, many mistakes that interrupted the flow of the story.

Tips for Judges:

1. If you liked a chapter, don't say 'it's nice' or 'great job! I like it!' or anything like that. Explain why you think it was nice

2. If you did not like it, don't just point out their mistakes, tell them how they can improve so they won't make the same mistakes again.

3. Write comments that are 3-4 lines long, so you can help the author improve and also point out their good points.

4. Don't be rude to the writer. Even if the whole chapter is full of mistakes, please still be polite.
