"I mean, they'll be more than likely to question the entire squad; they only questioned me because Amy informed the police about our class project and mentioned that she was on her way to meet me."
This felt so surreal—the fact we had a murderer roaming free on our college campus. Was this premediated, or was she in the wrong place at the wrong time? I wasn't going to lie and say this didn't scare me; what if we're next?
--
Never in my life did I imagine I would be in a police station, awaiting questioning regarding a murder—especially the murder of one of my former friends and the mistress in my relationship. I despised the thought of people believing I could commit such an act, but at this moment it was crucial to set the record straight.
"Ah, I hate police stations; they smell like stale coffee and wet dog." I chuckled at Cara's comment.
"Look at that officer; he really is the stereotypical policeman." The one in question was currently ramming a jam doughnut in his mouth and was covering himself in the white dust.
I sat picking my nails, never expecting to see the person I saw ever again. The two boys from the night of the party sat across the 'bullpen.' The shaggy-haired boy's eyes locked onto mine; I could tell was rifling through his memories to remember how he knew me. He raised his hand in the air as he remembered that night.
"Why is that cute guy waving at you?" Cara whispered as he approached us.
"Hey Josie, right?" I nodded and smiled. "I'm sorry, but I didn't catch your name?" He glanced at Cara with lust in his eyes. I couldn't help but smirk; I knew he would be interested in her—one way or another.
"I'm Cara Diaz." She held out her hand for him to shake. "And you are?" He connected their hands and looked back at the tall man he was sitting with.
"I'm Grayson, and that's Reid." He pointed at said guy. They released their handshake as he placed his hands into the pockets of his jeans.
"What brings you here?" he enquired, raising his eyebrows in curiosity.
"We could ask the same thing?" Cara smirked.
"I asked you first!" he flirted back. I shifted in my seat and tried to look anywhere but at them. They were both making googly eyes at each other.
"A girl on our cheer squad was murdered last night, and we're being questioned." I spat out, hoping they'd stop. I was pleased to say they did.
"Wait, Hannah?" I nodded at his question.
"We got called down for questioning regarding her murder too." Grayson gestured for his friend to come over. Reid appeared reluctant to join us. Upon reaching the group, his gaze lingered on me before shifting to Grayson. "Dude, they're here for the same thing."
Reid's eyebrows frowned, and his gaze danced over all of us. He was trying to figure out how we knew her and if we could do such a horrific act.
"How did you guys know Hannah?" I asked the pair as Grayson rocked back and forth. His eyes moved from Cara's onto Reid's. His mouth formed into a straight line and clicked his tongue.
"Mr. Reid here may have been in a relationship with her for like two months." Grayson slapped Reid's back as his bright blue eyes mirrored my own. He studied my face before focusing on my lips.
"They ended their relationship last week when he discovered she had been cheating on him." My body went cold for the second time today. He glanced down at his feet before leaving our group and storming out of the building.
"Did he find out the night of the party?" Grayson nodded and glanced towards the exit, feeling the urge to pursue his friend.
"Go get him." Cara instructed. Grayson silently mouthed an apology as he hurriedly exited to follow his friend.
"Fuck." I murmured quietly. Cara turned her gaze away from the door and towards me.
"What?" I rubbed my hands over my face and exhaled deeply.
"He found out Hannah was cheating on him because I told him." She looked at me questionably. "I met him and Grayson the night of the party; I said I had been cheated on by my boyfriend and my close friend."
"Did you mention her name?" I shrugged and leaned back in my chair.
"I said she was the co-captain." Cara sucked in a breath and nodded slowly.
"Don't beat yourself up about it; he wouldve found out about it either way. I mean, they did go to the party; it would be the talk of the night." She placed her hand on my shoulder.
"As bad as it sounds, maybe you two could bond over this? That way I could see Grayson again." I grinned and pushed her hand off me.
"I don't think I'll ever see him again."
