I almost fall asleep during the hours of rules and introduction the teacher goes through, so I am awake and ready when the bell rings for recess. We all race out, trying not to run over the 3rd graders we share recess with. Kendal, Jeanne, Max, Andrew, Stacy, and I immediately group together.

" yes!" Jeanne says perkily, "The spectacular six back again ready to take over the fourth grade."

I glance over at the monkey bars, and wipe my sweaty forehead, it's 80 degrees outside, and I feel like I'm trapped in a can that's slowly boiling me, until I'm a flaky shriveled up pile of blackened skin. This thought makes me pinch at my arms. I look back at the monkey bars and see Heather gossiping, probably about Jackie. Then Heather eyes someone. I try to follow her gaze and land on Jackie. This can't be good. They walk toward one another, and I find myself playing the kind of music you'd hear in wild western moments when two people are about to fight and they're eyeing one another. They get closer and I nudge Kendal, as they scowl at one another. They are a few feet away from one another when I jump in the middle.

" Whoa, whoa, whoa, what's going on?" Please don't fight, please don't tear me apart I thought. The panic must have showed on my face because Kendal jumped in, then Jeanne came forward too.

" This is a new year, you guys can start over, be friends, have fun with one another."

They didn't even consider this, idiots I thought.

" we really can't, not after she tried to turn the whole 2nd grade against me after I told everyone I beat her in softball," Heather said.

" yeah you told everyone that you beat me, and also told hem I suck and can't pitch, even after I struck you out. You've always had a big ego and your always bragging. Uhg, your so annoying," Jackie said, groaning and rolling her eyes.

" don't roll your eyes at me, your always so rude, and stupid!" Heather said her voice raising.

" you know, that's a pretty rude thing to say," Jackie smirks.

" I don't even want to talk to you," Heather says.

" that was a rough cat fight," Max says, his eyes wide.

Then there is a loud scream. A scream of pain.
