IF YOU DON'T WANT ME TO RUIN YOUR VEIWS OF YOUR FAVORITE OOC VERSIONS OF CHARACTERS, GO AWAY! I MEAN IT!
Last warning...
Let me explain. In every fandom, you have the original version of the character, and millions of other ways that writers and fans would like to interpret them. You have the canon character, the building block, I guess. Then you have the characters where certain parts of their personality or story are interpreted as something else. Then you have the characters that change based on add-ons to the story. So, here are some examples of each from a couple (literally 2) different fandoms:
The original: I can't really use CH for this, since there is technically no official canon. At least I don't think so. In that case, we're going with UTMV. Anyways, the original personality of...shit, idk, how about Corrupted Nightmare (or Night Terror). I think I know his canon personality? He's an asshole. A straight up asshole who feeds off of negativity. He enjoys killing people for fun. He's bossy and extremely moody. Ok, now lets look at the other OOC versions of him...
The Fandom Favorite: Fanfiction doesn't always favor the naturally evil. By that, I mean they don't keep their canon personalities. I can't say that I don't enjoy or do this--taking the canon version of the characters and flipping parts of it--and it is a very popular thing, but it's not canon. Like, at all. Instead of him being the gaslighting bitch he is, he becomes the dad (or mom) of the group. He takes care of them all in his own moody way. He can be kind, which I think he is technically incapable by Night Terror's original character.
Let's explore something else: glorifying characters. I am definitely guilty of this. Certain characters I just... it's weird to explain, but I just hate seeing them as the bad guy. Now, I accept that they have flaws. Definitely. But, I just don't like putting them in the villain spot. I can put almost every other character there, but not them. I know that I am not alone with this. Comment what characters you can't stand seeing villified or characters that you can't get enough of as good or grey characters when they are originally bad.
Guiltily, I confess that in CH, it is very difficult for me to read when Ame is the bad guy. I don't really know why, maybe it's because I am incredibly partial to the idea that he has mental issues? But Germany (like, the current day Germany) is hard for me to put in a villain position too. In the UTMV, I must say that when the bad guys are good and the good guys are bad, I absolutely adore it, but Horror as a (complete) bad guy just doesn't sit right with me. He's an oversized teddy bear, change my mind.
Uhhh, this got away from the main point. What I'm trying to say is that different people give different characters a lot of different personalities. Like America being loud and obnoxious or that just being a mask. Or Error being an asshole or just someone who wishes to be normal and get rid of his guilty conscious. Or Blue innocent or not.
Honestly, I've been meaning to write a page a little like this for a while, but I've never had a) the guts, b) the time, c) the energy, and/or d) the motivation. I probably could have written more, but I really didn't want to. So yeah. Enjoy?
Random little side note: Sometimes, when people write books or talk about everything wrong with something, I just can't bring myself to read it if it's something that I personally enjoy. Because then, I will start reconsidering every decision I've ever made, and I really don't enjoy that. But it is good to make those, so that you get your feelings out ad point some things out to people. I'm not trying to hate on anyone who's done this, I'm just stating my opinion. Does anyone else feel the same, or am I just being paranoid or unreasonable?
