I nod, "Yeah, we are."

"That's-" She looses her balance as she almost drops the heavy bag in her arms.

I rush and grab it, helping her lift it up. "Yikes, this thing is heavy! What's in here?? Bricks??" I take a peek inside.

Mirabel laughs, "Surprisingly, no. Thanks"

"No problem!" I return her smile. "I've been meaning to ask, about the ceremony. Uhm. What is it? I've heard people talk about it all day, but I have no idea what it is!"

"Rosie and Emilio haven't told you?" Her eyes widen with surprise.

"No? They're really playful, it's no surprise they're keeping this from me. But I'm so curious!"

"Ah, that sounds just like them. Well, come in. I'll explain inside."

~ I help Mirabel carry the bag inside, but I couldn't help my eyes from wandering around the house. There were people everywhere putting up decorations and getting ready for what I assumed was the ceremony. Everyone was too preoccupied doing what they were doing to notice Mirabel and I come in.

We made it to the kitchen where Julietta was in the middle of making something.

"Ma! Coming through" Mirabel warns as me and her walk through the kitchen and set the goody bag on a counter.

"Mija, who's this?" Her mom asks as she notices me. I couldn't help but feel a little awkward in their home.

"I'm Y/n. Nice to meet you. I came to visit my Tía Rosie and Tío Emilio." I say with a smile.

Julietta grins. "Such a nice person. How's the baby?"

"Still healthy and on its way!" I say.

"That's good to hear."

"Okay so," Mirabel butts in. "Sit sit." She motions towards a seat while she takes one herself.

"The ceremony. I assume you know about our family already right? The gifts?"

"Yeah"

"Well when a kid in the house turns five, they are assigned a door. When they touch the door, their gift is revealed. It's a really big thing in this house.." her voice trails off. "And tonight, my cousin Antonio gets his! So we celebrate!"

"Do you know what he's going to get??" I ask.

"Unfortunately.. no. It's a surprise to all of us. We won't know until the ceremony." She responds.

Suddenly, the tiles in the kitchen move on their own and bring in a clock.

"Woah woah woah! What's that??" I lift my feet off of the ground.

Julietta laughs from behind us. "Don't be scared. That's just casita. Let's just say.. our house is very lively. And speaking of lively-" she turns to Mirabel. "It's time to start getting ready for the ceremony."

I stand up. "I take it that's my cue to leave"

"You don't have to. You can stay with me, I don't mind." Mirabel starts.

"No no. It's okay. I have to go anyways. My Tía will probably worry, and I don't want to give her any unwanted stress. I'll see you at the ceremony tonight."

She nods. "Sounds good. See you then!"

~

I walk back home where Tío and Tía were waiting for me.

"Y/n," Emilio starts. "How'd you like today, huh? I see you got a little sidetracked from our errands." He chuckles.

"Ah, sorry Tío. I got distracted and met this girl named Mirabel. I think you guys know her? The Madrigal? And we're friends now! ... I think"
