Hello Stranger

"One day he disappeared!" She said in a loud whisper.

Disappeared? Who? What did I miss??

"Oh! And that's my mom Julietta, here's her deal." She points to another middle aged woman nearby who was handing out food to a line of people.

I watch as a man's broken wrist got fixed as soon as he bit the food. "Woah! The truth is she can heal you with a meal!"

Is that?? Is that even humanly possible?! She kept running around the small town, and I follow, hiding in bushes, behind buildings, or blending in with other people as I did.

She went on two introduce two men, who apparently married into the family, who didn't have a power.

Some of the little children following the girl interrupted her singing. "Wait but who's the sister and who's the cousin?" "Theres so many people!" "How do you keep them all straight?!"

I stifle a laugh. Those kids ask the important questions.

The lively girl responds to their questions by singing once more. "Okay, okay, okay, okay! I think it's time for a grandkid roundup!"

She ran to a young woman with wide eyes and curly haired tied up into a high bun. She was super pretty. "Cousin Dolores, can hear a pin drop!"

She ran to a boy, also looking around my age. He wore a bright yellow ruana and had very curly hair, just like Dolores. "Camilo shapeshifts!" The boy took a baby from an exhausted looking mother and.. turned into her??

What??

"Antonio gets his gift today!" The girl continued, introducing her two older sisters and their powers.

I follow and we eventually made it to the Madrigal house— I hid in a nearby bush.

"Mirabel!" A voice came from inside the house.

I peeked out from the bush and saw an elderly woman looking at the girl— Mirabel, with a confused expression. "What are you doing?"

My gaze shifted to Mirabel.

"She was about to tell us about her super awesome gift!" A little girl yelled.

Suddenly, Dolores peeked out from inside the house. I saw her glance towards the bush I was hiding in, but quickly directed her attention towards the group of kids. "Gift? Mirabel didn't get one.. hm!"

Huh? She didn't get a power?

Another little girl said what I was thinking as she turned to Mirabel. "You didn't.. get a gift?"

Mirabel looked as she was about to say something, but was interrupted by a middle aged man giving her a 'not special, special' as he described it.

Ouch.

She grabbed the heavy bag and the kids dispersed. As I was trying to walk away, I accidentally stepped on a branch, causing it to crack very loudly. Shoot!

Mirabel stopped in her tracks as she turned to my direction.

We made eye contact and an uncomfortable silence filled the air for a couple of seconds.

"Oh. Hello! I uh.. I've never seen you around here. Uhm. Sorry but, what are you doing hiding in that bush?" She asks.

I sigh and step out. "You got me." I laugh nervously. "Sorry. I just heard you singing and got curious, sooo.. yeah. I'm visiting my relatives, that's why you've probably never seen me."

"That makes sense! Who are you visiting?"

"My Tía and Tío. Rosie and Emilio." I explain.

"Oh I know them! The expecting couple right? Those two are the sweetest. Are you guys coming for the ceremony tonight?"
