Confrontation for chapter 3: Mi Amor

Alma looked at us disapprovingly. "You were always a bad influence..."

Bruno made sure I was safely sitting again before approaching his mother. "Mami," he said, looking up at her through his hair, "can we do this at home?"

"No," Alma said. She pointed at me. "You, Mariposa, have been nothing but trouble ever since your parents passed! Encouraging my boy to tame rats and sneak out! I should - "

"Stop," I said bluntly. "Not in front of my sister."

Alma looked furious that I would interrupt whatever her threat had going to be. "How dare you disrespect me?!"

I reached for my crutches. "Go practice in your room, Rosa. Mrs. Madrigal, we can talk outside."

Alma, Bruno, and I stepped outside, standing close together as it stormed above the oning over my door. "Look what you two did!" Alma scolded. "Now Pepa is upset!"

"Pepa is upset?" I scoffed. "What about Bruno?! Pepa hides her feelings from you as best she can but you don't care about Bruno! You can stand there and yell at me all you want. I can take every word, every threat, every last misconception you want to push against me. Hell, I could take it if you threw your fucking sandal at me every time you saw me! But I won't let you speak to mi vida like that."

"Mi amor," Bruno breathed out.

Alma gasped as her nose scrunched in disgust. "Home, Bruno," she ordered.

"No, Mami," Bruno said, grabbing my hand. "I'm staying here. I'll be at the Casita in the morning."

Alma became visibly furious. I half expected her to take her sandal off and attempt to murder me on the spot. Instead, she turned on her heal and left in the pouring rain.

Confrentation for 17: Mirabel

Alma pushed past me, throwing the door open but soon came back in, soaking wet. "You did this!"

"Me?!" I yelled. "What about you? Bruno didn't want to do that stupid reading for you at all! I would have left too!"

"Leave my house!" Alma yelled.

"Happily!" I screamed out. "But I won't be back until you apologize!"

"For what?"

"For never treating us like family! For only caring about what I could do for you! For judging my children for the gifts your miracle gave them!"

"Out!" Alma pointed at the door.

I took a deep breath through my nose to compose myself and turned with my head high. I paused only half a second at the door, silently apologizing to Julieta and Mirabel for leaving them with the fall out of the night. "Alma, I used to think we fought because we were just too alike."

"We're nothing alike!" Alma screeched like a three year old having a tantrum.

"You're right," I said calmly. "Because as much as we both love this family, as much as we both have so much pain in our pasts, and as much as we both don't want to loose everything again, you push everyone away instead of holding them close."

"Get out of my house!" She stomped her foot.

I met Alma's eyes. "You're a horrible person." And I left quietly.
