5: Happy Birthday

"Happy birthday, Mariposa," Bruno said as he kissed my forehead to wake me. "I've made you breakfast."

I smiled as I opened my eyes, willing them to focus on my fiance's face. I sat up and chuckled a little as he offered me a pancake with burnt bacon forming a smiley face. "Thank you."

He rubbed his neck. "I know it's not much but R-Rosa helped me make it."

"It's beautiful," I smiled and kissed Bruno. "Thank you."

Bruno began wringing his hands. "I thought you could use a good start to your day."

"Oh?" I asked.

"The end may not be so nice..." Bruno muttered as he sat on the bed with me.

"I'm sure we can handle it," I said, grabbing his hand with a smile.

Bruno tapped the bed frame twice. "Knock on wood." He took a deep breath. "We're having dinner with my family tonight."

My comforting smile dropped. "Well shit."

Bruno threw a pinch of salt over his left door as I locked the door. "Pepa is nervous," Bruno said, pointing out the looming clouds.

"So am I," I said. "We can't wait for tomorrow?"

Bruno shook his head. "This dinner is about Pepa and Mama expects everyone to be there."

"Okay," I said, mentally preparing myself to sit at the table with my future mother in law.

I watched Julieta set the table as Pepa paced the hallway. "I'm sorry I'm not much help, Julieta."

She smiled at me. "That's okay, Mariposa. I'd never ask a guest to help anyway."

"Why'd Bruno bring you?" Pepa asked nervously. "Nothing against you but I had expected it to just be family."

"Oh, uh," I rubbed the back of my head. "Good question."

"Pepa," Bruno called, " Félix is here!"

Pepa rushed out of the room to get the door.

Bruno stumbled into the kitchen with us. "S-s-sorry to make you wait, mi cielo," he studdered.

"Bruno," Julieta said calmly. "Can we try to keep the future talk to a minimum? Pepa really likes Félix and is hoping he'll propose tonight."

"Of course, Julieta," Bruno said as he took a seat beside me.

Soon, Alma, Pepa, and Félix entered the kitchen and took their seats.

Julieta had served dinner as Alma questioned Félix about his life. Eventually the conversation faded into life stories from childhood, then into how Félix met and fell in love with Pepa.

Félix grabbed Pepa's hand with a smile. "Pepa, mi vida, will you make me the happiest man in all of the Encanto and make me a Madrigal?"

Pepa squealed as a rainbow blossomed over her head. "Yes!"

Alma smiled approvingly at the match as Félix slid a ring on her finger.

"Congratulations, Pepa," I smiled.

"Thank you, Mariposa," she said, admiring her ring.

Bruno let out a deep breath of relief as Félix left for the night. "I suppose we'll see you engaged next Julieta," Bruno joked lightly.

Excitedly, Julieta clasped her hand together. "Really?"

Bruno shot a glance to me that said he really didn't know before agreeing with her.

"As soon as Julieta is betrothed," Alma said, "I'll set up a match for you, Bruno."

My eye twitched as I realized just how deep in denial about our relationship Alma was. "With all due respect, Mrs. Madrigal, Bruno already has a match."

"Oh," Alma smiled politely, "Rosa is looking for a suitor?" Pepa and Julieta looked to each other before back to us as though we were the latest telenovela.

"Not yet," I growled. "And as the head of my own house, I will do the arrangements when she is, thank you."

"Oh?" Alma seemed to grow a little bit agitated as I demanded the same respect we both deserved. "Then I will handle the arrangements for Bruno. Perhaps that girl down the street with the flower cart."

Bruno grabbed my hand to stop me from retorting. "Mama, we're going to get married."

"You can't marry someone older than you, Bruno," Alma said, reaching for excuses.

"Bullshit," I muttered.

"It's already decided, Mama," Bruno said over me, trying his hardest to muster confidence from his anxiety. "I-I-I already proposed."

Alma's eyes went wide. "No."
