When I woke up the next day, I looked over at Ross and Emmett to see if they had awakened. As I watched them slumber, I felt a sudden urge to leap at Emmett, to tear his throat out, to feel his still-warm blood gush over me. I gasped, resisting. Once it passed, I felt idiotic and foolish. I spent a whole afternoon doing nothing but mooning over some silly boy, and I had wasted time. I couldn't forget; I had the Virus, and I had to take my brother to the Colony, where he would be safe from the monster that is me.
I heaved myself onto my elbows and leapt from my cot. I splashed some stream water on my face, and began packing supplies. Water, unspoilable food, clothing, and weapons were essential. I couldn't help but pack the Sugar Twist wrapper, too.I purposefully walked over to Emmett and Ross, saying in a no-nonsense tone, "We are leaving. Now."
Both of them squinted wearily at me, surprised at my sudden change in attitude.
"We are going to the Colony. Today. Right now." I command, my voice clearly stating that there was no room for arguement.
And within an hour, we were on our way, to wherever fate would take us.
