As we dine quietly on the stew Mina concocted, I attempt to make her smile. I tell all the jokes I know, just to see a shadow of a grin on her. But what really delights her, is when I pull the candy from my bag.
"Sugar Twists! I haven't seen those in forever!" She gushes, and gazes hungrily at the treat. Both her and Emmett have the look of hunger, envious of such a delicacy. I make a decision, one that my stomach will probably regret.
"You can have them." I try to act indifferent, but I am eager to see her smile.
"I got them from an abandoned candy factory. I have more." I try to explain to make it seem as if it was a casual gesture.
Her mouth opens, gaping wide, slowly morphing into a delighted smile. My daydreams were nothing compared to the real thing. She was breathtaking, even in the half-darkness, even with the grimy skin and raggedy clothing. I couldn't help but think; I might like her.
