that sinking feeling you get

tsukishima would never get used to waking up alone, in a cold bed, at seven in the damn morning. it was one thing to have his muse and lover, kuroo, laying beside him. it was another to have the cold, empty, soulless pillow replacement.

with a heavy sigh, the blond reached for his glasses. saturdays were the hardest wake up days. he generally worked from mid morning to evening during the week, weekends were spotty depending on who could come and who couldn't.

usually, he was covering a shift or two for his slacker coworkers. other times, he got to get an extra hour or two of sleep. today was no exception, kyotani decided last minute to bail on his early morning shift, leaving tsukishima to pick up the slack.

it's not like he exactly minded. working at an up and coming donut/coffee shop wasn't the worst. especially knowing kuroo owned, managed, and took care of the place. 'like a true entrepreneur', kei thought, slipping on a complimentary 'depression and donuts' sweatshirt.

what possessed tetsuro to go through with that name was beyond him. tsukishima's best guess was that tetsuro was in a silly goofy mood and wanted to stand out. it worked. for a lot of reasons. 1. tsukishima got a job and 2. tsukishima got a boyfriend.

without a loss in sight, he made his way to the kitchen. " good morning tsukki ! " yamaguchi's voice almost gave the blond a heart attack.

" you're up surprisingly early " tsukki quipped, going into the fridge for a bottle of cold water— who liked room temp? " i thought you wanted to get ' maximum brain capacity ' by sleeping in ( not that you could get that but.. ) "

" hey ! " yamaguchi lightly shoved his friend, not exactly making him stumble but earning an equally satisfying glare. " early bird gets the worm ! and today this early bird is getting a puppy."

tsukishima raised his eyebrows, closing the fridge as he stalked over to the counter. " so you decided to go through with it? " he couldn't say that he was shocked. for the past month yamaguchi was agonizing over what to get his lovely girlfriend for her birthday/ christmas.

it was a good idea in THEORY but to tsukishima seemed a bit selfish. the two would be living together in two months, the dog was definitely a personal gift disguised as a ''''surprise''''. though, he couldn't help but feel a bit happy for them. he and yamaguchi basically grew up together. there was comfort in knowing they could both begin to live separate lives when the new year drags around.

" i meannnn..." voice dragging on, yamaguchi shrugged his shoulders, waving his hands in the air. " it wouldn't be the only gift, but yachi has been hinting at cute dog stuff. i might as well roll the ball .. so stop with your selfish train of thought >:("

tsukishima shrugged in response, heading towards the hallway that lead to the door. " let me go with you ! " yamaguchi pressed, following behind as tsukishima turned to face him, eyebrows raised in surprise. " im up and the walk isn't far ! plus a quick pick-me-up wouldn't be so bad.."

yamaguchi was ready to go, he wore a bit too many layers along with a sly smile on his face. "im suspicious " tsukishima said finally, squinting at his best friend before turning back to the door. quickly adding, " we're not walking, it's too cold for that shit." before letting the shorter walk through.

the car ride was barely three minutes. the sheer coincidence of the donut shop and tsukkis apartment being so close together really put the icing on the cake. when it wasn't as cold as hell freezing over, tsukishima chose to walk.

" you're certain you want to walk back? tetsu can drive me home." there was no way yamaguchi would win this argument, as fun and exhilarating walking in the snow was, he wouldn't let his friend get sick walking in the bs weather.
