It was my first day at UA. I wanted to be a hero. I wanted to be a hero for the school, for the basketball team, for the community. I wanted to be a hero for my family. I wanted to be a hero for my little brother, who I didn't know would one day. be trying to stay out of trouble like me.

A year before my arrival in Japan, three fellow classmates at J.H. Rose High School had died by gunfire, and it was now my turn.

I walk into Class 1-A to see multiple students talking. I walk closer to them and realize they're talking about how they are going to kill me.

I walked away and went up to my class.

"Stop talking," I said. "You shouldn't be talking about killing me."

The blonde boy turned around.

"I ain't say nothing."

I walked away.

The sun had already set by the time I was called to the office. They called me and the other boys into the office. I waited with my hands behind my back.

"Tenya Iida, Minoru Mineta, and Katsuki Bakugou. Please sit down."

We walked into the room and sat down.

The vice principal called our parents into the room. We were told we had to tell them about what happened.

"Katsuki, Tenya and Minoru all got into a fight. It was serious, too serious. Katsuki got shot. Minoru got stabbed. Tenya got hurt as well. I'm just going to let the adults talk."

I wanted to go, to be with my parents. But I stayed quiet.

The adults told my parents what had happened. My mom and dad came in and saw me.

"You weren't even involved," my dad said to me.

"Are you happy with the school taking no responsibility?" my mom said to me.

I didn't say anything.

I didn't say anything.

What did I do? Why didn't I do anything?

Because I was trying to be a hero.

Other kids may not have called the cops. Maybe they would have gotten hurt, too. Maybe someone else would have gotten hurt.

I needed to be a hero.

But, in retrospect, I wish I had done something.

I should have stopped the fight. I should have asked one of them to stop.

"I feel like I should expel you boys." The principal said.

I'm sorry, I thought to myself. I'm sorry.

That night, in my room, I cried myself to sleep.

Sometimes I think about that day. I think about what I could have done. I think about what I shouldn't have done. I think about what I wish I had done.

I have no regrets. I just wish that I had done more.
I then hear a knock on my door. I go to open it and see Mineta standing there.

"Why are you here?" I ask.

"The boys want to apologize," he said.

I was nervous.

"OK," I said.

I heard them talk and I stood there for a second. They were apologizing to me.  We were like we were back in kindergarten, but it was important because I made them my friends, so I was a hero to them.

"Mineta," I said.

"Yoshitomo Iida."

"Mineta."

"Mineta."

I said it again.

They opened the door and went into the room.

They were standing in front of me with their hands behind their backs.

"Do you guys want to go to the arcade?" I asked them.

Mineta and Katsuki nodded.

"Go to the arcade," I said. "But you have to go to my place first. I don't want you to go to yours."

"What about my parents?" Said Mineta.

"Your parents don't care about you. We do." I said. "So go to my house and then get back here in time for dinner."

"OK," he said.

I went to Tenya's house first and let him use my mom's car. Tenya and Katsuki got into my mom's car.

"You can stay at my house tonight," said Tenya. "Mom and Dad won't mind."

"Thanks, Tenya," I said.

"What time?"

"At least six. We'll be back in time for dinner."

"Right," said Tenya. "See you later then."

"OK," I said. "See you later."

Tenya went back to his house and I went to Mineta's house.

I didn't really think about it, but I guess you can say that I was a hero that day.

Katsuki and Mineta ended up going to the arcade with me that night.

The moral of the story is that sometimes it's better to be a hero instead of a helper.
