Here I end up again, standing in front of these large dark wooden doors, waiting for them to be opened, waiting to face my shadows. All those dark memories that I left hidden behind in these castle walls came back flooding my mind. My eyes started getting moist and my body began to get numb. That's when I felt someone softly holding my hand. I came back to my senses looking at our intertwined hands. A heartfelt smile spread across my face and my eyes moved up to look at the love of my life, my husband Jackson.
"Whatever the future holds we'll go through it together." He said with determination.
"It's not like I'm going to let you escape. You're officially stuck with me Mr. Ranger" I remarked giggling.
"You'll never miss to find humor in problematic situations. "He said cracking a husky chuckle.
"Well one of the parents has to be the cool one, not everyone can be boring like you, love." I argued circling my other hand around my little bump.
"Did you hear that baby, your Mamma is bullying me again because she's jealous that you're going to love Daddy more" he said taking to our little bean.
That's when the heavy doors flung open making me go back to my defensive self. I saw some guards coming our way, followed by a petite old man dressed in crisply ironed uniform looking at us with surprise filled in eyes and a wrinkled smile on his lips.
"I see you didn't forget about me yet Lucius." I said smiling.
"Nobody in this castle can ever forget about a soul like you Ms. Fiona. The castle became silent after you left. It's so good to see you on the royal grounds again mam."
"I missed you all too Lucius but I'm here for a brief visit, I'll leave with my husband as soon as the treaty is changed." I said to him but it seemed more like reassurance to myself.
"Regardless of the circumstances, it's nice to meet you sir. I'm Jackson Ranger, Fi's husband." Jackson introduced himself being his friendly self.
"I always wanted to meet you in person young man, after all she chose you over Dante. You must be worthy I have faith in her choice." Lucius said making Jackson slightly proud.
Hearing his name made my spine cold, all I could feel was a void, no emotions just a sense of betrayal spread through my body reminding me to face him without any trace of care inside me.
"But I fear that this visit won't be as brief as you think miss" he spoke.
"Wait how you know me?" Jackson suddenly interrupted him being reasonably curious.
"Everybody in Tethoris knows you Mr. Ranger." He replied and started walking further into the royal residence leaving a clueless Jackson behind.
Jackson was confused but didn't continue the conversation. I guess he must've sensed the tension in the air. We followed Lucius towards the court in complete silence with guards following shortly behind us. The sound my heels clicking on glossy marble floor must've been really loud because almost everyone was trying to steal a glance of me as we walked through the main halls towards and the court where he's waiting for us.
Isn't it ironic that we're meeting again after 8 years, in the court, exactly where our perfect lives changes for once and forever, and all that left behind was pain. This awfully long walk finally came to an end when I found myself staring at this golden door again.
I take a deep breath, Jackson places his hand on my back making me feel protected and leaned in to kiss my forehead making me realize that this all is worth it, after this we'll be able to completely move forward with our lives without any shadows of my past. I have to cut all ties with this place completely this time, especially because we're going to have a family now. As much as I feel guilty for dragging him in this mess with me, I can't imagine doing this without him by my side. I glance at him for the last time before entering the room that held the memories of that unfortunate day and all I could see was his smile full of love and care for me, same as the day I first him 6 years ago.
