Chapter One

Those months when everything changed. I think back to how unaware I was.

My life was good. Typical high schooler living a typical life. Our family was the epitome of boring. Father, Mother, daughter, son, living a middle class lifestyle in a suburban town in southern Indiana. Need I say more?

Then things began to unravel.
It happened so slowly at first that it was easy to overlook. Subtle changes.

Elijah was late coming home.
We stopped having family dinners every night.

Dad was out on weekends.
But I was oblivious.
When they sat me down about the divorce, I was completely blindsided. I felt my life was falling apart.
Ha! If I only knew then....

Finding out your parents no longer love each other is bad. I suppose kids go through that all the time though, and honestly I'm lucky I had a two parent family so long- at least that's what my bestie Angela says (no support there).

But coming to find the twin brother you've always been able to turn to to vent and discovering that he's not around for you anymore? That hurts. It hurts bad.

I put my hand up to rest on the glass separating us and wait for him to lift his eyes.

I'm so close I can see the deep breath he takes before he raises his gaze to meet mine.

I'm met with a stare I know so well. A face I've seen every day for the past eighteen years. Up until last week.

Eyes, green, identical to mine stare into my own and then back at the floor.

Elijah Stark.

There's not a human in our town who hasn't heard that name.

Not an adult or child who doesn't fear those deep blue eyes, scorn that dark brown hair and hate every inch of that freckle dotted face.

He turns his head and I notice a scar. That wasn't there last time I saw him.

Even though it was just last week, as hard as I try, I cannot remember when the boy standing in front of me was just my brother Eli, and not alleged murderer Elijah Stark.
