An Elegy to My Hair

Healthy, strong, soft,
things you were in life,
now in death,
damaged, broken, barely recognizable.

You were gorgeous in your own right,
yet felt the need to change,
Now look at you,
look where it led.

For years, hiding under pretty colors,
unwilling to show your true self,
it hurt you more than you ever imagined it would,
and once the consequences set in, it was too late.

You were already gone,
yet despite death,
you still try to return, to revive, to regrow.
Maybe one day it will stick.
