You slept through the whole weekend, not leaving your dorm except to get food. Emma did the same and the both of you avoided talking to other people the entire time which included ignoring the rest of the group.
You didn't mind sleeping most of the time because it gave you time to not think. It was a break from the reality you were trapped in. Sleeping was your only escape.
By Monday, you felt better. Not great, but better than on Saturday for sure. Emma was still shaken by the events, but she too was recovering well.
You hadn't seen or talked to Cate since the day you left, and you knew that you were going to see her today, you couldn't avoid it. You worried that she would pull you out of class or something. If you were to talk to her, you thought you might break down again and be back where you were the few days before.
You tried to get through your other classes without thinking in general which worked quite well, but when you saw her, it was hard to keep your composure so you kept your eyes glued on your desk and the floor.
The problem was that you could still hear her voice, everytime she spoke you wanted to hug her and cry in her arms. You knew she would comfort you, but you couldn't do that, you wouldn't allow yourself to do that. Not for you and not for her.
By the time class ended you were so distracted that you didn't notice until it was too late and Cate was hovering over your desk watching you.
"Hello Y/N." She said in a warm tone that made your heart melt.
You couldn't speak, your mouth wouldn't allow you to let any noise out. Instead, you looked up at her with large, glassy eyes and hoped that it was enough to show her that you were still struggling through all of it.
"Come with me." She said quietly. You got up and walked out of the room with her and then into her car. She quickly drove off from the campus and you ended up at her house again. It was strange to be back, back where it all happened. This was the place where everything went to shit and Cate had to live here. It must be terribly difficult. You could only imagine.
She led you inside her house and you sat down at the kitchen table.
"How are you?" She asked as she took hold of your hands.
"I don't know how much longer I can take this." You said weakly. You could now see how much it was tearing you apart. You had never had this close of an experience with death before, let alone someone you know commiting the murder.
"I know honey. It's going to be okay." She said comforting you.
"Have they found him?" You asked her. Since Friday night, you hadn't been on your phone or watched the news because you were too afraid that you might see John's face at the top of an obituary.
"Yes, last night. He was taken by the police to the morgue and it was said that they would be performing an autopsy on him since his body wasn't terribly... ruined." Her voice drifted off and you could feel the pain in each syllable she spoke.
"Are they going to question us?" You began to worry again.
"Probably, since you are friends with him?"
"What about you?"
"No one knows that we had a meeting that night. No one knows that everyone was at my house because I didn't inform any staff member of it."
"Then why did you help him get away with it? Why are you helping him and the rest of us?"
"Because I am still a part of this whether the police are aware of it or not. And I will not let any of you go to jail. I can't have that." She said looking down at her hands still intertwined with yours.
"I'm scared." You told her. You could feel your eyes water again. You were so sick of crying but you couldn't do anything about it.
"I know darling." She said as she wrapped her arms around you and guided you to the couch to sit down. She sat next to you and hugged you tightly. She was sad too, you could tell, but she held in her feelings well.
The both of you stayed that way for a long time. Neither you spoke or had any reason to move and it was the most secure and safe you had felt in a while.
Once your tears had settled and your heart beat at a steady pace, you looked up at Cate. Her icy blue eyes pierced into your soul like they could see everything you were feeling. She was full of sympathy for you and then you could slightly see lust within them.
You looked at her with all of your strength and you thought you might actually do it. You thought you could lean into her and she would do the same, but you couldn't. You didn't want to put her job in jeopardy and with everything that had happened, you just couldn't.
The thing was that she could, and she did just as you wished she would. She leaned towards you and cupped your face gently with her hands. You lifted your chin up to meet your lips with hers and let everything else in the world dissolve.
You loved every second of it. Her soft lips and warm hands that held your face. You knew it was wrong, but you felt that it was meant to be. In the way that you existed because of her existence and the same for her.
You couldn't do it though, you couldn't ruin her entire career because of a feeling. So you pulled away and let your lips separate slowly from hers.
"I'm sorry." You said solemnly.
"Don't be sorry." She smiled sadly like she understood everything that you were thinking and did not hold any anger because of it.
"Can I stay here for a while?" You asked quietly as if someone were in the room next to you. As if they would be able to hear you if you spoke any louder. It may have just been your paranoia because you knew no one else was there.
"Of course darling, as long as you want." She answered.
You hugged her tightly and rested your head on her chest and fell asleep like that. Cate must have fallen asleep too because you woke up around evening in the same spot still holding onto Cate.
You unlocked your arms from her body and sat up. It was later than you had expected and you needed to get back to your dorm. You didn't want anyone to get suspicious of where you were. You also needed to check up on Emma and see how she was doing.
Cate woke up from your movement even though you had tried your best to be stealthy.
"I should go back" You told her.
"Alright." She said as she tucked a piece of hair behind your ear.
The both of you hopped into her car and drove back to campus.
"Are you going home this weekend?" She asked casually.
"Why would I go home?"
"It's Labor day weekend."
"Oh, I forgot about that." You thought for a second and then knew your answer. "I don't think so. I don't know what I would say to my parents if they asked me about school."
"I understand." She took her glance off the road and looked at you as you sat in the passenger seat of her car. "You're welcome to come stay with me if you don't want to be left alone in your dorm."
"I'll think about it." You said as you secretly smiled.
As you came back into your dorm, Emma was already asleep and you realized that once she was gone, because she would definitely be going home this weekend, you would be completely alone and you didn't like it much. You debated on taking Cate's offer or not. What bad could happen? Nothing worse than you had already experienced.
