I could hear them screaming from downstairs.

David, my best friend's brother, and his dad, were screaming at each other. It wasn't unusual, but it still made me feel awful for David.

"Hello? Are you even listening to me?" My best friend, Bridgit, snapped in my face.

"Sorry, I'm just worried about your brother." I admitted.

"It's alright, he's usually pretty tough about it to protect me." Bridgit sighed. They were twins, David and Bridgit, but David was over two hours older. He would protect Bridgit with his life, I was sure. Their mom had died when Bridgit and David were eleven, and after six years their dad still hasn't recovered. He was always drunk and screaming at David.

"I know that, but it's never sounded this bad before." I countered. I don't why I was thinking about this so much, David and I knew each other and all, but we've never been exactly best friends.

"I don't want to be around my dad, so as soon as he leaves I promise we can check on him." Bridgit offered. I nodded slowly.

There was a door slamming, and then total silence. Bridgit was in the shower, and I sat alone in her bedroom. That door had to be their dad leaving to go drink some more.

Without thinking about the consequences, I tiptoed down the stairs. Even though I came down quite a few minutes after David's dad left, David still stood staring at the door. He didn't even glance at me when I approached him. He looked as if he was about to burst into tears, tears that would never ever stop.

"David?" I whispered. After a long silence, he looked at me. His lip quivered.

"Oh, h-hey." He sputtered.

I've never even held a full conversation with David before without someone else in the room before, but as my instincts took over, I wrapped my arms around David's neck and squeezed him into a hug. David, shocked at my sudden closeness, stood as still as a statue.

But, ever so slowly, I could feel one of his hands creep over the small of my back, and one towards the middle. We stayed there for a long time. To me, it felt like hours. But I knew it was only a few minutes. I could feel David shaking under me. He was crying.

"It's gonna be alright," I whispered, 'I promise." David nodded into my shoulder.

"Hey guys." Bridgit called softly from the bottom of the stairs. I slowly released David, watching as his hands flew up to wipe his tears.

"What happened, Dave?" Bridgit asked, going to give her brother a hug. She lead him to the couch and ushered me to follow.

"H-he said that I wasn't his s-son, and that he never wanted t-to see me again. Bridgit, I d-don't think he's going to c-come back sober, if h-he comes back at all." David sputtered. He was holding back his tears now that Bridgit was here.

"Why don't you want to cry in front of me? It's okay, David. I'm strong too." Bridgit nudged.

"Because we only have each other and I need to take care of the only family I have left." David whispered.

"You guys also have me, you know that right?" I cut in. My voice was barely audible.

David managed a smile. It was nearly invisible, but it was genuine.

"We love you." Bridgit said to David.

Bridgit and I consoled David for a while, and by every passing second, I could feel my sympathy and like for him expanding. I don't know why I've never been friends with him before. He was a sweetheart.
