Jason tugged on the girls hand as they ran through the streets of Gotham city, their hoods over their heads which hung low, avoiding any bits of light. The soft sound of rain pattering on the littered and cracked pavement of the rotting city echoed between the buildings and throughout the night.
"Come on this way," Jason told her as his eye caught the sparkling, almost majestic looking car that was parked down the alley, "Look at her... isn't she beautiful?" Jason asked with a smile as they stood in front of the car. His blue eyes danced over the vehicle in front of them, a smirk tugging on his lips
The girls green eyes looked over the car, her tongue ran across her lips, something about this didn't feel right, "I don't know J, maybe we should just go find another car" she said as she turned her head to look up at the boy
He looked down at her, his eyebrows furrowed as his eyes scanned her face, taking in all the freckles that littered her pale skin, "Come on Addy what do you mean, we could sell just the brims of these tyres and make a few hundred easy."
"I don't know J, something doesn't feel right you know" she muttered to him and this only seemed to confuse him even more, she was never the type to back out and she never usually had a problem with stealing things, they had to survive after all
Adira looked away from the boy and looked back down towards the expensive looking, shiny black car that was just mysteriously parked down a dark alleyway, a small sigh fell from her lips as she nodded her head and twisted the spanner that was in her free hand, "alright, lets get to it"
Jason grinned at her response and nodded his head, twisting the cool metal of the tool in his hand before the two of them went straight for the wheels of the car, it wouldn't take them long to get the job done, after all, the two of them had done this many times before.
Infact, if they had only had a few more minutes, they probably would have got the job done, running away with the heavy tires tucked under their arms, but instead they were stopped by the sound of a small thump which was followed by the sound of someone clearing their throat.
"Shit" Adira and Jason muttered at the same time, both of them stopping what they were doing and looking up at the unknown person, the two teens felt their jaws drop at the same time as they stared at the apparent owner of the vehicle.
The man in front of them was trapped head to toe in black, he had a cape that almost touched the ground and on his face was a mask... the man in front of them was about one of the last people that they had expected to run into that night.
"Would either of you like to explain to me what you are doing?" the man asked the two teens calmly, the man didn't move his gaze from their faces, not bothering to look down at the tools and the wheels that were almost off his car.
"Oh you know, just giving your car a bit of a wash," Adira told the man sarcastically, a blank look on her face as she stared up at the man. A snicker fell from the lips of Jason Todd as he grinned down at his best friend who stood next to him, quite a bit shorter than her.
To their surprise, the man in front of them smiled a little bit at the girls words, "Its funny, I've never seen anyone wash a car this way... but don't let me interrupt, you two go ahead and keep cleaning, its been a while since she got a nice wash down" the man told them
Neither of the teens moved, they turned to look at each other, neither of them knowing what to do in this situation, should they try and talk their way out of it? Or maybe they should just try and do a runner? Maybe they could try and fight their way out of the complication?
No... that would be a stupid idea... after all the person that they were standing in front of was no other than the bat himself, they would have no chance in a fight against him, sure both of them were pretty good fighters and the girl somehow had a lot of skill when it came to daggers and throwing knives, but neither of them particularly wanted to take a chance against fighting Batman
"Look man, we will just leave okay" Jason muttered to the man and picked up the tools and shoved them into his back pack and then threw the bag onto his back and put his hands in front of him in defense
"I don't think that you will be going anywhere" the man told the two teenagers
"Come on, we are sorry alright, we needed to get some cash for food, we are sick of dumpster diving okay? and you know a few blankets would be nice" The girl said to the man in front of them, she wasn't exactly trying to come up with excuses, but she would be lying if she said their living conditions were ideal.
Most nights they slept on pieces of cardboard by a fire laying as close to each other as possible just so they wouldn't freeze to death in the nighttime. The Bat seemed to be thinking as he looked at the teens
"What would you do if i told you that I had an offer?" the man asked them and both of the teens had to hold back a scoff as they looked up at him
"What? we kiss your shoes and you wont go to the police?" Jason asked, a scoff falling from the boys lips as he looked up at the man, a hint of anger burning in his blue eyes
A small chuckle fell from the bats lips as he shook his head softly, "I want the two of you to come and live with me" he said and the two teenagers felt their jaws drops once more and they were suddenly questioning their sanity, had they heard the man correctly?
"I'm sorry, what did you just say?" The girl asked him in confusion, she had to have heard him wrong...
"I want the two of you to come and live with me," he repeated and then continued on with the rest of the terms of the 'deal', "I will train the two of you in hand to hand combat, teach you to use weapons, I will give you a home where you will be fed, you wont have to worry about digging through trash cans to find meals"
The teens were liking the sound of that, but they weren't showing it, surely there had to be more to it and they weren't going to give the man the satisfaction of knowing that they were interested just yet
"You will work alongside me to protect Gotham city..." the bat said and the teens looked up at him and both of them let a sarcastic laugh fall from their lips
"and why the hell would we want to protect gotham?" the girl asked the bat sarcastically, "what the hell has this city ever done for us?" she said and Jason nodded his head from next to her, clearly agreeing with the girls statement
"They put us out on the streets to defend ourselves, hell we get beat by the cops, we get beat by randos, we get treated like trash, the city has never done anything good for us, so why the hell would we help you protect it?"
"Because it is the right thing to do," Batman told the teenagers, a hopeful feeling in his chest as he looked down at the two worn out looking teenagers that stood in front of them. His mind wondered back to Dick, his son... Robin.
He needed a new Robin, and as he looked down at Jason, he couldn't help but think that he could be perfect for the new role, the new defender of Gotham city. He had a fire in his eyes that was clearly being fueled by his soul, the boy had a short temper and was irrational, but he could work on that, and that could even be used to help him in a fight. He was driven and compassionate, and Bruce was hopeful that the boy held potential... great potential
His eyes then moved to the girl who he had noticed when he first arrived, who had moved protectively in front of the messy-haired teenage boy. She was loyal and protective, she had quick reflexes and good intuition, and a strong spirit.
Bruce didn't know what it was, but there was something about these two teenagers that gave him hope for Gotham.
"and you will live in a giant mansion for free and get free food and drinks, plus your own bedroom... fresh clothes... hot water..." Bruce added, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips
"and all we have to do is kick bad guys ass?" The girl asked, her right eyebrow quirking as she looked up at the man in front of her who nodded his head. Adira turned to look at Jason who was already looking at her, "what do you think J?"
Jason shrugged his shoulder, a small grin on his lips before turning to look at the bat, "so when do we move in?"
