The air is filled with the sickening mixed scent of frying onions, burgers and enough sugar to comatose an elephant – not that an elephant would be at the funfair, nor would it be interested in consuming a bucketful of bright blue candyfloss. Connor and Rachel on the other hand… They’re immediately intoxicated and drawn to the cheap and cheerful ‘Cotton Candy’ stall which has been strategically placed right by the entrance. I politely decline the sticky mess that’s being offered to me and carry on wandering towards the other attractions. I take in my surroundings, and the rides and stalls that I may potentially be interested in revisiting at some point throughout the night, but first, I think the only stall that’s selling beer is calling my name. Well, I mean, I need something to warm me up and to make this night slightly more bearable.
In the corner of my eye I notice the happy couple feeding each other candyfloss while standing in line for the house of mirrors. I start towards a bench; unfortunately Rachel seems to have a different plan for me. She drags me by the sleeve to the line where Connor is waiting. I hear tuts and a few murmurs about me cutting in. I ignore it. It’s not my fault I was dragged.

I take a deep breath in. I love the smell of the funfair. Burgers, onions, sugar and excitement! I stand in amongst the large crowd for a few moments and just take everything in. I want to absorb everything that’s going on. All the excited children, the parents that are watching their kids’ faces light up in amazement and awe, all the couples; those who are so in love, the ones who are still trying to woo each other and the old couples that are lucky they found their sweetheart many moons ago. I don’t think there’s anyway anyone can be miserable at the funfair, it’s unnatural.
My parents usher me further. All three of us slowly spin around in our own little circles, making eye contact afterwards and smiling at one another.
“So, Lana, where are you going first?” “
“Me? Aren’t you guys coming with me?”
“It’s a bit much for us to make in all at once, sweetie. We’ll wait in lines with you though so you won’t be alone.”
“Oh.. I don’t want to do everything on my own.. I guess I’ll start with house of mirrors then. No one will see me on my own in there.”
Mum and dad give each other a look as we head towards the back of the line. We see some kids run into the line up ahead and dad starts tutting. I glare at him and he tried to cover it up as whistling.
