"Went where?" Richie asks, already packing up his computer stuff.
"She went to see our eldest brother Jordan."
***************
A train to Idaho is what we took. Richie found Jordan pretty easily and we left as soon as we all had packed.
The train arrived the next day and we all set out to find his apartment. It's a nice place and it looks very much like something that Jordan would like to live in. Not that I know Jordan all that well, I've met him only a couple times before he moved out and even then I don't really remember him.
I buzz the thing and tell the others to be quiet and let me do the talking, seeing as he was my sibling.
"Hello?" A voice answers.
"Hi, is this Jordan Carter?" I speak into the intercom.
"Yes, who is this?"
"Jordan, it's Lana. Can we talk?" I shift my weight to the other side.
"Lana? What are you doing here?"
"This would be a lot easier if I could talk to you in person."
He doesn't speak for a moment. "Okay." The door buzzes and we all enter, finding his room easy.
He opens the door to me, not noticing the other two who were standing on either side of the door. "Hey, Lana. What's up."
"Jordan, we need to talk." I state simply.
"Yeah, I got that. About what?"
"About Jane. I know she came to see you. I want to know everything that happened."
Jordan hesitates before trying to slam the door closed. Lizzy pushes forcefully against the door and knocks Jordan back. She enters first with me and Richie right behind her.
"Are you guys cops?" Jordan asks bewildered.
Lizzy laughs at that. "I'd have to arrest myself if I was one. I like you, you're funny." She points at him with a wide smile.
Jordan doesn't know what is even going on.
"Jordan," I take a step towards him, "we're not here to accuse you or anything. We're just here to find out what happened when she found you." He studies me for a moment before nodding and leading us to the living room.
We all take our seats, all watching Jordan as he gathers his thoughts. "It started when Jane contacted me, she said that she needed my help and that we should meet up at my place. So she arrived the next day. We talked about our mother, she told me everything; the abusing, how she felt like she didn't have any control over her body. She told me that she met a girl who died in an FBI facility, um . . . Lizzy." Lizzy tenses next to me, but doesn't say anything. Might as well let him keep the information he has now and not make it so confusing for him.
"She even told me that she went back to see you Lana."
"She didn't actually go to see me, she went to hid and I just kind of . . . found her." I explain, smiling as I replay the memory in my head.
"Right. After she finished, I told her she could stay and she did. She stayed for a couple days before the cops found out, I still don't know how. But she escaped out the window and that's the last I had heard of her until Aunt Mallory called about the funeral. I barely had the strength to go. They said that she drowned, that she probably threw herself off a bridge. I just couldn't see that in her, someone who could take her own life like that." Jordan looks down at his hands.
After telling him that we weren't going to let her go like that, that we would find out the true purpose of why she did that, it was completely dark outside and we all had work to do the next day. After arguing about where to go, we all decided that I was to stay with Jordan because he was my brother and Lizzy and Richie were going to a hotel down the road. We say our goodbyes and I throw my bag on the spare bed in Jordan's extra bedroom. Jordan gives me something to eat and I had a little of it before I placed the plate on the nightstand beside me. Making sure the coast was clear, I take out the journal I found and turn it to the page that I'm on.
Hey Lana.
If Jordan doesn't know about Lizzy being gone then don't tell him that she isn't. It will just make him confused and I don't want you to have to deal with any more drama than you have to already.
Anyway, I went to Jordan only because I had no where else to go. I know what you're thinking. That I could have returned to Aunt Mallory's and you would have promised that you wouldn't talk about me again. I'm sorry, Lana. You had one chance, but I understand that you were only a child then. I still trusted you though, remember, we'll still see each other in ten years.
Anyways, I have a choice to make. Only read the next part of this when you finally understand why I had to make my choice.
Your sister, Jane C. Carter
I close the book, push under my pillow, turn out the light, and quickly fall asleep.
