I hailed a cab home, upon arriving I was surprised to see Patrick’s car in front of my house. He was in the car and exited it as soon as I was in sight.

“You seemed to have a lot of fun. I didn’t expect you to come home by this time.”

I didn’t exactly know how to respond. We weren’t together anymore but he was complaining about the time at which I went home.

“What are you doing here anyway?”

“I figured that we could end the day together. There’s this movie you've always wanted to watch which is being shown at the theater tonight.”

“Are you seriously asking me on a date Patrick?”

“A friendly date?”

He pouted and I found that cute of him to try to cheer me up. The truth was that I was really in need of a friend and was grateful to him for his presence.

“Ok, I’m in. But you pay for the snacks.”

“I thought you were an independent woman?”

“Of course I am but I am offering you the opportunity to be a gentleman."

We both hopped in the car and went to the theater. Patrick paid for enormous quantities of snacks and I warned him against a bad tummy ache but he didn’t listen. I had been longing to watch this movie for an eternity but I wanted the occasion to be special. But as ordinary as the occasion was, it was precious enough to me, being in pain and having a friend to hang out with, that was special enough to watch this movie. Even though Patrick was the one who had invited me he didn’t seem very interested in the movie as he spent his time glued to the screen of his cellphone. I decided not to consider that and enjoy my movie.

Once the movie ended we decided to take a stroll by the nearby park before going home. All this while he had done nothing but using his phone. It grew on my nerve when I realized that he wasn’t even listening to me when I was talking.

" Patrick, you are not listening to me. "

"Uh-huh."

"Patrick!"

He got startled by my outburst,

"Look, it was sweet of you to take me out tonight but if you are not ready to spend some time with a friend then it’s of no use."

He sighed,

"I am sorry Lisa, got some issues to deal with-"

His phone rang and he immediately picked the call. I couldn’t decipher what it was about or what he was saying but once he was done he gave me an apologetic smile,

"I’m sorry but I have to go."

I suppressed an eye roll, this was a situation I had faced an unhealthy number of times when we were dating. He offered to take me home but I refused. I couldn’t let him ruin my night, I decided to stay some more at the park. I let the soft breeze caress my hair as sat on the bench by the river.
