Grace was a cat. Every morning she would wake up in the nettle of some bushes in a planter box right outside of unit 7 on Portum drive. She would stretch her scuffed up paws, do a walk around and then exit the shrubs. She enjoyed the sound of the songs of the sparrows and the Jays, the contrast of the warm sunlight and the cool shade on her fur, and the smell of the foliage and the earth. A woman walked out of her apartment and locked the front door before continuing on into the parking lot. Grace coyly walked towards her acting as if she had been going the same way and the woman just happened to be there. Said woman sensed the feline's company and stopped walking. She looked down and Grace took a seat, licked a paw. The woman decided to extend her hand and pet Grace on her head and ears, "sweet baby," she whispered briskly before she stood back up and moved on with her day. Grace astutely turned, swished her tail, and walked on into the sunlight.
Andrew was a cat. Every afternoon he would wake up in a dumpster outside of the cvs pharmacy, the night before having eaten all he could take of the scraps of food that were left there by the drive-thru fast food restaurant nearby. Eyes half open, body aching and a tinge numb, he would finally gather himself enough energy to heave himself over and out of the bin, landing with a thud onto the concrete. His eyes were struck by the brightness of the sun as he slinked zig- zaggedly across the parking lot. His fur was matted and stained by the debris that was his bed and the dirt that he liked to roll in. He sauntered over to a homeless man who made his dwelling on the side of the cvs store. Tony was his name and he was sat against the red brick wall holding a thin tarp for covers. "Hey kitty kitty, come here kitty kitty." Andrew bumped his head into Tony's hip and brushed his face against it. Tony lit up, "Good kitty, you're such a good kitty aren't you." He ran his unkempt fingers through Andrews fur and brushed his back with a rough palm. His eyes relaxed and his face went soft as ones does in the sunlight.
