Even for that brief second, we'd shared a bond I knew. She was far more beautiful than I could have ever imagined; nothing would ever compare. I knew from this moment forward my life was never going to be the same again. I was relieved at the thought.
---
Namjoon had emailed me the list, but as I looked through all of the staff and the pictures of their ID cards, no face looked familiar. Obviously, I wouldn't see colour from just looking at her picture, but hers grew unclear in my mind as I saw more and more faces. If only I knew her name... This list was futile. As my mind began doubting that I'd ever see her again, I slung the files off my desk and slammed my fists furiously into the hardwood.
"Ow." I winced at my foolish actions, quickly shaking off my hand to soothe the pain. A familiar warm body brushed up against my calves. I leaned back to see Siwoo, my tiny Maltese puppy, playfully swishing his tail at me.
I had a family dog Jjanggu that passed away from old age a few years ago; Siwoo wasn't a replacement by any means. In fact, Siwoo being only 13 months old, had been a final bridge into adulthood. My mother still took him when work took me abroad but so far, that had only been once, and I had no intention of doing it again soon.
Namjoons' contact came up on my phone as it began to buzz; I quickly answered it. "Any luck with the list?" Namjoon asked.
I deeply sighed and stood up to gather the list that was scattered across the floor. "No, I don't recognise anything. The more I look, the less I remember what she looks like. I don't want to make a big deal for the whole crew, but do you know of any parties the crew are having. Maybe if I attended a few, I could get more chance to meet her?" I suggested.
Siwoo's little feet pitter-pattered behind me as he too began to collect the paper. Or, well, it was more like shredding it as he impatiently dragged it towards me. I patted his head lightly and held my hand out, gesturing for him to drop it. "I can see what I can do," Namjoon answered. "In the meantime, have you seen the notes from the latest script? Their editor said she wanted to have a call tonight and go over a few suggestions you made?"
"I'm free now." I paused as I glared at Siwoo, who refused to let the paper go, "Drop it!" I laughed as Namjoon let out a confused sound at the end of the line. "You talking to that child of yours or me? Want me to get a trainer for it?" Namjoon asked. I gasped and quickly pulled the boisterous puppy into my arms, shielding his ears.
"I'll have you know my son is well trained, he sits, gives paw-," "-chews your sweaters leaving them with more holes than a knitted fleece." Namjoon finished. I sighed, "Alright. Just send me this editors number and let me get back to this list."
Namjoon ended the call. The following text I received was a random number,
'Who am I asking for?' I replied back.
'The woman's name is Alice, Alice Woods.' Namjoon answered.
There was no denying it. I hated being the person to call someone first. When no contact came up on the screen. I always assumed it was some strange telephone sales or a scam asking for my bank details as I'd been the winner of one million dollars.
Can't you just ask her to call me first? I pleaded with Namjoon, but there was no response.
My fingers typed all the numbers of her phone number out. I paused to look at the screen, double-checking the number was the right one. I didn't want to embarrass myself by calling the wrong number.
As the dial tone rang out, I cleared my throat. I scolded myself mentally. Why on earth was I so nervous? It was just an editor.
"Hello, Alice Woods' phone, Taehyung speaking how can I help?" A strange male on the other end answered. My mind was on pause at the sound of the man's voice. There was a sense of familiarity as if he was someone I walked by every day.
"Ahhh-... Ummm. Yes hello! My name is Jin. I was wondering if I could perhaps speak to Miss Woods? My agent requested I call her regarding the latest script changes on my end." I explained firmly.
"Of course!" Taehyung replied. I could hear the muffle of the hand over of the phone as he called her name at the top of his lungs. My heart warmed to the slight affectionate tone.
Maybe this would be how I'd address my future soulmate; my mind wandered in the scenario. What pet names could I call her? There was an unspoken ache in my chest to learn her name, but I knew I had plenty of time.
"Sorry about that, Alice speaking." She responded formally. The same bright spark ignited in my chest from the sound of her voice. "Apologises for contacting you so late, but I was just reading over your notes on the script and wanted to discuss a few things..." I heard her voice in my ear, but my words wouldn't form.
I shook this absurd feeling that I'd heard this voice somewhere before and finally cleared my throat to conjure a response. "I'm sorry we haven't formally been introduced; the name's Seokjin, but I'd prefer if you just call me Jin," I replied with my usual bright tone. "I'm well aware of who you are, Mr Kim." Alice retorted. Super polite was all that came to mind as she blatantly avoided the shortened version of my name.
Most people, women especially, jumped at the chance to call me Jin. Therefore, I was pretty stunned when she'd reverted to the opposite end of the scale and refused to even call me Seokjin. "I had a few issues with the scene on page 76; this phrasing on the script leaves my character starting a fight with-" I began, but she cut me off.
"-ahh... if you mean that fight with Mr Rodger's character, I was just drafting an email regarding a new draft as I don't think it quite fits your character's persona either. Perhaps he'd react slightly differently. I'm open to interpretation. We could perhaps alter the retaliation purely on Mr Rodger's end." She suggested. Clear cut, professional at the point.
It was efficient; despite the warmth in my chest, when I heard her voice, I couldn't help but feel cold. Maybe it was the way she referred to me as she did with the rest of the cast, her overly polite tone. Or the fact she's was already resolving it, and I'd be saying goodbye as quickly as we'd said hello.
"I'd like to send over a few propositions for my new lines?" I suggested. Her end went silent while I assumed she thought over my proposal. "Of course, I'd be more than glad to read through some of your ideas. Just text me when you send them, and I'll read them tomorrow."
Tomorrow... somehow, I felt dejected by the mention of such a long time away. My eyes glanced towards the clock as I realised the evening was drawing closer towards midnight. "Yes, I'm sorry. You probably want to rest." I quickly apologised. "Ahh, you're not inconveniencing me, Mr Kim. I just know the schedule says you're filming Act 7 tomorrow, and I don't want to keep you up too late." She quickly explained.
Caring, thoughtful, as well as professional. Miss Wood's was undoubtedly a reliable member of the crew. It would be nice to get better acquainted with her. After finding my new soulmate, of course! I smiled at the thought, "I don't go to sleep early. The whole rough sleep-deprived look is a part of my character anyway." I laughed, "I understand that feeling; I always do my best work undisturbed late at night," She quickly laughed along too.
For a moment, the two of us laughed; it was strangely familiar. Although I knew we'd never met face to face. I felt comfortable. Hearing her laugh, still withholding herself, but I could tell the laugh was genuine, just controlled. I would never know why I had to spoil it with my following sentence: "Do you know of any upcoming staff parties, Miss Woods?" I questioned.
The sudden silence of laughter brought an uncomfortable tension I could taste almost through the phone; it was that potent. " I don't attend parties, so I wouldn't know," She informed me cooly. I didn't know what else to say, how to follow up the conversation after she had reacted so harshly to even the mention of the staff party.
"If that is all, Mr Kim, I'll await your suggestions and get back to you tomorrow. Goodnight, Rest well." Her voice politely wished me an obligatory goodbye. We both hung up. I was left feeling rather foolish for ruining our brief moment of blossoming friendship.
I could only hope my social skills would fair better on my soulmate. I went to sleep later that evening, dreaming of her eyes. The few glimmers of colour I could only pray to see again soon... as well as the captivating, mysterious stranger who was living proof I was no longer broken.
