"Well, that's the last of them!" The boxes were scattered all around the open-plan studio apartment. The walls were still bare, exposed brick or planks of timber that only let in the sunlight; there hadn't been an ounce of colour in the place. The owner who previously lived here had been a lonely old gentleman who'd never seen the need.
"Most of it's your stuff anyway!" A familiar voice echoed by the front door as he closed it behind him. The voice belonged to my soulmate. It wasn't some nickname of adoration; he quite literally. He was my soulmate, which in turn meant I was his.
"I only see one name labelled around here, and that's Taehyung", I retorted. "Taehyung's ties, Taehyung's cosy pyjamas, Taehyung's gaming and tech supplies, Taehyung's clothes and even more of Taehyung's clothes." I reeled off the surrounding labelled boxes. A tiny whine came from Taehyung's arms.
"This box isn't mine." Taehyung declared. I gasped before rushing over to release my beloved son from his prison.
"Don't listen. Your Dad is being cruel. It might have been because you chewed that tie I brought him for Christmas." I spoke softly to the tiny Pomeranian as I freed him from his dog carrier, placing him gently on the floor as his wet nose delved into the nearest stack of boxes.
"It was for my birthday!" Taehyung huffed before quickly snatching up the box labelled 'Taehyung's ties' as, Yeontan or Tannie, our shared Pomeranian puppy, prowled closer towards his prize. The small puppy yipped in disappointment at Taehyung's exposed feet. I smiled in adoration at my perfect little family.
"Aren't I supposed to carry you over the threshold?" Taehyung suddenly gasped as he dashed over to my side. I shook my head, laughing, watching as his arms trembled as he attempted to pick me up so he could carry me back to the front door.
"There's still the bedroom threshold," I suggested with a coy smile. Taehyung returned the same expression as his eyes narrowed upon my lips, watching them intently as they let out a sharp exhale as I noticed his eyes burning into my lips.
Taehyung, as promised, walked me over the threshold to our bedroom. Finally, it sounded weird saying that this room was finally ours to share after all these years—just me and Taehyung.
Part of me wanted to close the door to the messed-up world and the people who resided there and remain beside Taehyung like this forever. I'd spent an entire lifetime loving him, as unrealistic as it was, but greedily it still wasn't enough. It would never be enough. Even at the promise of forever... would still not be enough.
"What is it." Taehyung's voice coaxed me from my thoughts as his hand carefully brushed away my fears of time inevitably slipping away. "I want to stay here with you always..."I sighed as I nuzzled into his neck, enjoying that soft, comforting smell. Taehyung smelt of lavender, a floral scent that offered the same joy as resting your eyes upon a large collection of them scattered across the forest floor. Sleep could come easy in such scents; it offered a sense of home, but most importantly, it was like a soft pillow that you'd return to at the end of the day.
Taehyung carried me to the bed and carefully let my legs perch on the end of the soft mattress that had to be yet decorated in the plentiful sheets, pillows and blankets we owned. "I need the toilet. I'll be back in a second. Don't go anywhere, angel." Taehyung soothed as his lips rested on my forehead briefly with a lingering kiss before leaving the room.
Then the whole room shifted the way it always did when Taehyung left. The sharpness of the way the light had shone into the room and bounced off the walls vanished. My eyes wandered down to my once bright blue jeans that were now a dull grey. The blue had been replaced, as had the soft undertones of pigment in my skin as I glanced over my thin fingertips. Everything in an empty monotone shifted something within my heart. As if the world was missing something, the lackless colour was like looking up at the night sky and seeing no moon and no stars.
