THE PROTECTORS WERE CREATED BY THE UNIVERSE TO KEEP EVERYTHING BALANCED. They were all Airbenders and they were meant to spend their lives serving the Avatar, the master of all four elements. As one, the two of them were supposed to keep the peace and protect the human race. From what? The spirits or themselves? When the Fire Nation attacked and it was proved to be the latter.
To keep the Avatar and his Protector from stopping the Fire Nation from taking over the world. They attacked the Air Nomads. They believed that all of them were dead and therefore and killed both the only hope for stopping the war and the person who kept him balanced.
Leyha's ancestors managed to get away from their home in the middle of the attack and spent the next hundred years hiding in fear that the Fire Nation would find them and kill their last chance at peace. Leyha was only the third Protector born after the war started. The blue arrow tattoo that was wrapped around her forearm was something that she was born with but it was easy to hide. It still felt like she had a target on her back since the moment that she was born.
Because she was so young when the Fire Nation finally found her and her family, she barely remembered how to airbend. All that she remembered from her life before she was dragged to the palace was her mother's face but even that seemed to fade over the years.
Hiding the reason why she was sent to train in the palace along with the Firelord's own children was easy when she was a child who did not ask many questions. The older she got, the more curious she became about who she was and what her purpose was.
Not even her close friendship with Zuko and her sister-like relationship with Azula could keep her from running away from her "home" to try and find the next Avatar. But, unlike Zuko, she did not plan to kill him. She wanted to help him and bring justice to the legacy her family was protecting for centuries.

▊ finally bringing this back! I actually loved the neftlix adaptation more than I expected. there were flaws and it isn't better than the original show but it still inspired me to come back to this book
still, the book will follow the original content rather than the show (I will add some plots that netflix added just because I liked them) because I obviously prefer it and because netflix will probably cancel it like it does to everything so I won't even bother
