*FLASHBACK*
"Carter, think fast!" I said throwing the ball in the air, taking advantage of Carter turning around to watch the sunset.
"Jules!" He protested, spinning around in an instant and swiftly catching the ball.
Carter and I were both 12, and best friends plus next door neighbors. Everyday at around 5:00 PM, Carter and I would play a game of catch before we had to go. Usually I would win when he turned around to watch the sunset and I caught him by surprise, but he was catching on to my trick.
"Kids! Time to come inside!" My mom announced, and Carter and I trudged inside to say goodbye for the evening.
When we walked inside I saw his parents and my dad still sitting down, and my mom took a seat as well and I guessed they weren't leaving yet.
"Kids, take a seat," Carter's mom, Auntie Jillian said, and Carter and I obeyed and sat down.
"Carter, Juliet, we have something to tell you," My mom said, adding to the suspension.
"Carter, we're moving," Carter's dad announced.
"WHAT?" Carter and I burst out at the same time.
"When?" Carter asked, strangely calm after a few moments of confusion and panic.
"One month," Auntie Jillian answered.
Carter and I breathed a sigh of relief, there was still enough time for us to celebrate our birthday together. Mine was the 3rd of March, and his the 4th of March, and we vowed we'd celebrate it together.
"But Juliet...Carter won't be able to spend much time with you, as they have to pack," My mom said, giving me a sympathetic smile, completely raining on our parade.
Carter and I immediately slouched, and gave each other a 'I guess this is goodbye' smile.
After some sympathetic words, and a reassurance that we'd still have our party, they left.
3 WEEKS LATER
There was one week left until Carter moved away to Pennsylvania, and one day left until our 13th birthday. I flipped through my closet, looking for an outfit for tomorrow.
"Jules! Come down for a second, Carter and his parents are here!" My mom shouted for a second and I raced downstairs to meet Carter.
"Juliet, we have some bad news," Auntie Jillian started.
"We're moving tomorrow..." Carter finished, barely getting the words out.
"What?" I asked, confused, tears brimming my eyes.
"The date moved, Dad has to be at work by this week," Carter explained, clearly as depressed as I was.
I couldn't handle it anymore, I burst into tears and ran to my room, flopping onto my bed. Tears steaming uncontrollably onto my face.
Carter ran up to my room, and we talked, possibly for the last time, but eventually he had to go. After some comforting words from my mom, I fell asleep, not bothering to go outside, or even call my friend Stacy, who would soon be my only friend.

"Carter, I don't want you to go," I sobbed.
"I know, I don't want to leave either," He whispered, tightening our embrace.
We were standing in my room, and his parents waiting for him downstairs.
"Promise you'll remember me, and you won't find a new best friend in Pennsylvania, okay?" I sniffled.
"I will never forget you Juliet," He said, as we ended our hug.
"Happy Birthday," He smiled, pointing to the cupcake on my desk.
"Carter! How'd you get that there?" I giggled, surprised.
"A magician never gives away his secret," He said giving me a lopsided grin.
"Goodbye Jules," He said, giving me a quick kiss on my cheek then running downstairs to meet his parents.
I stood there stunned, then realized I'd miss him leaving and quickly followed him downstairs.
"Goodbye Carter Sanders," I whispered to myself, as his car drove off.
As soon as he was gone I ran upstairs to make a wish, the cupcake had no candle, but the sentimental value was enough for me to believe that my wish would come true.
"I wish i'll see Carter again," I wished and took a bite of the cupcake. I know Carter wouldn't want it to go to waste.
I picked up the phone and called Stacy. "Stacy, what was the movie you wanted me to watch? The Notebook?" I asked, flopping onto my bed and turning on the TV. I don't know if it was chance or fate, but the Notebook was showing, and to fulfill Stacy's wish, I watched it. Little did I know what had just begun.
