Ship: Demon Muichiro X Demon Slayer Tanjirou (MuiTan)

Warnings: Angst and Slight Violence.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The final battle was never supposed to end the way it had. Tanjirou had done everything humanly possible to protect his friends. To protect others. But with each casualty, it felt like his hold was slipping. Like he would fall overboard and be drowned beneath the waves. It was unbearable. To make the final crack to his own already aching heart, he'd witnessed Muichiro's death. The one slayer that had his heart in his palm. It was the final blow he needed before he crumbled. Almost everyone was dead, which meant there was no hope. He saw no point in the fighting, only to grant more bloodshed.
He had given up. He wanted it to end, to go join the only person that brought a true smile. His sister had been gone for too long, killed because the Hashira couldn't believe in her. Muichiro was his support. He'd been there for Tanjirou when he needed someone the most. It sparked a flame that was all but spiraling out of control. It left tears trailing his skin that felt like acid. He wanted his light back. His happiness.
Those thoughts had never meant to become a reality. Once dead, he knew there was no return. But Muichiro had proven it wrong. Those eyes that shimmered only showed the drastic change. The mist like tattoos that stretched over the frail and bloodied skin. Those eyes bore a hunger deep in them, resting on Tanjirou's figure. The one person he cared for was now in the same spot his sister had been in. It brought too many emotions and his tears were surging harder than before. He could hear the faint movement, but made no attempts to flee. To strike. He just sat there. There was no point. He was going to die. He had accepted that truth.
He could hear the movements still, Tanjirou waiting for his end. He could see those hands moving in the corner of his vision, only forcing his heart to tremble harder. The anticipation was deafening, his heartbeat strumming loudly in his ears. He was waiting for his aching heart to stop beating. For his eyes to close. For his body to feel weightless. But alas, that never came. Instead those hands that should have marked his end pulled him near. The hug was tight, a more protective manner as Muichiro stood on guard as other Demon's and Uppermoon slaughtered around them.
Tanjirou had been caught off guard completely, but made no attempts to pry away. It showed Muichiro was still there, even if not human. That thought alone aided him. Eased his sadness and growing loneliness. He couldn't help but enjoy the embrace, feeling truly safe in those arms. But his thoughts were also interrupted by another voice that broke his trance. A smell that made his heart drop miles below him.
"Hand him over. He's to die." Tanjirou couldn't hide his fear, Muichiro trying to assure him through actions. But it didn't work. He was the greatest enemy to Muzan. The main who ruined his life in the first place.
"I refuse. Let me keep him under my watch, where he won't cause trouble."
"That is not how this works. I order you to kill him, or I will." Muichiro scowled before Tanjirou swallowed the lump in his throat. He didn't want to die, not now. Not when Muichiro was before him.
"I refuse still. I will not-"
"Turn me into a Demon then!" Muzan and Muichiro were silent, the Demon king frowning.
"Why would I do that? It's better if you're dead."
"Because what better way to assure you've strength on your side, then recruit the one slayer you despise due to ancestry. I become a demon, you have the last sun breather on your side." There was a long pause, Muzan thinking over those words. Tanjirou knew he made a fair point. Muichiro seemed bothered at first, but had discarded it after seeing Muzan smirk in the end.
"You've made your point. Fine. I'll take you up on the request. Let's just hope you survive. Should he make it, he's your responsibility, understood? He falls out of line, you both will cease to exist." Muichiro simply nodded, holding Tanjirou tighter as the Demon slayer shook slightly. He was terrified. It was obvious. But this was his choice.
So Tanjirou sat there as Muzan pierced his skull. The blood that invaded him was painful to take in. It burned and felt like his insides were tearing. Those tears only grew as he tried to suppress his cries, but it was impossible. The pain was unlike anything. But as soon as the pain had begun, it also ceased to be. His vision had been swallowed black and he knew then, he was dead, yet not. He could hear things around him, but not open his eyes as of yet. It was a sign he had survived the transition. It was proof he was going to be able to stay with Muichiro. That brought endless joy as he could feel the other holding him tighter. As he opened his own eyes, he smiled as he hugged back. The tears that once were laced in fear, were tears of joy.
"Welcome back, Tanjirou."
"I'm back."
