Part I Chapter 1- Eight Years Later
Everything was quiet. The dark house was silent, eerily like a grave. I could only hear the scruffs of various footfalls form my friends, almost blending into the loud silence of the mansion. They tiptoed around, grabbing whatever they could set their hands on, stuffing it into their hoodies and pockets. I was doing the same, well, attempting to do the same. But I couldn’t find anything out in the open. All the drawers and cabinets were locked.
I wandered out of the room, into the massive hallway, trying to find another room to steal things from. I slid along the wall, regretting the soft echo of my shoes on the hardwood floor. My outstretched hand felt a doorknob and I slowly twisted it to open into what looked like a bedroom. A teen’s room. I glanced around to look whose it would be, feeling a wistful sigh escape my lips. If only…
I shook my head. Don’t even think it, I berated myself. My eyes glanced around the room until they landed on the four-poster bed against the far wall of the room. What caught my eye wasn’t the size of it, or the satin sheets that glowed beneath the streaming moonlight from the huge glass window behind it. No, what caught my eye was what was on the bed. Which was absolutely nothing. No body, no person. Meaning…
I felt a hand on my wrist and I jumped a mile in the air, too shocked to scream. My head snapped to my wrist and followed the hand up to the face of the boy the hand belonged to. My eyes locked with his, gray, like liquid silver, staring back, almost like they were looking into my soul. His blonde hair shone a silvery white in the near dark room, framing his pale face. He looked about my age but I couldn’t tell.
I tried to step back, but his grip on my wrist tightened and I began to panic. My heart thundered against my chest, threatening to crash through my ribs and on to the floor between me and mystery boy.
“Let go,” I whispered, my tone pleading, and at the same time looking back to hope that none of my friends had followed me out of the room. We couldn’t all be caught at once.
The boy shook his head at me, and I think my heart revved up its speed, though I don’t know how that was possible with its already heavy hammering.
The boy stepped closer, until there were only mere centimeters of space between us.
“I won’t tell,” he whispered, his lips brushing my ear. “I promise.”
My tension at his words disappeared; only to return again as I shivered at the contact, but my attention was soon directed to the new cold presence in the palm of my hand. The boy leaned away and I took the chance to look down at what was in my hand. A small music box fit perfectly into my palm, the ivory color glowing almost mystically. I looked back up at the boy. I opened my mouth to ask him why. But the sound of a creaking board in the hallway stopped me.
“Run,” he whispered.
So I ran. I ran to escape. I didn’t care about the noise I was making anymore. I just ran, down the hallway, down the spiraling stairs, past the living room, the parlor, the kitchen, and leapt out through the open window behind the sink. It wasn’t until I was blocks away did I realize I still had the music box clutched in my hand.
I heard pounding footsteps behind me and I glanced back to see the other members of my group. I paused, waiting for them to catch up, hastily pushing the music box into my pocket.
They arrived together, and we all gasped for breath, but not for long. We heard the shouts of pursuit before we actually saw the figures of three huge men. And so we started to run again, this time for our lives.
