"When you look at me like you want more... ." Taehyung's voice whispered lazily, letting his deep voice linger on his confession. I pushed myself upright and sat on the edge of the bed, turning my back to him. His words had brought me back to reality, clutching back my self-control.
"Taehyung, I-" I began bashfully but didn't know which words to use to start to explain.
I felt a set of arms wrap around my waist, his hand resting on my stomach, his tall figure curling against my back as his chin rested on my shoulder. "I'll wait however long it takes, whenever you're ready." Taehyung's voice soothed.
It was a complicated issue why I hadn't taken that final step into completing our bond. Although Taehyung and I had known each other as young children, my first memory was meeting him for the first time. Two couples brought together their young children to socialise before they could barely stand on their own two little chubby feet. Taehyung's smile was the same when we first met when I was just under a year old. His gummy smile formed perfectly in a boxy smile, showcasing his odd few teeth that had begun to push through.
Unlike most people who'd spent their life searching for their soulmate, We'd been together for nearly 25 years. Taehyung was that cheerful but shy artsy child who loved everyone and everything; his favourite pastime was taking pictures. Even when his world was black & white, he still managed to capture the most beautiful photographs.
My fondest memory was when he'd eagerly barge into my room to show me his photos; I often sneaked into his developing room while he worked. I was so young that none of the whole soulmate situations made any sense back then. Nevertheless, I was always amazed that while looking into Taehyung's eyes, his photographs transformed into a surge of technicolour.
Remembering how that feeling sunk into the pit of my stomach as I watched the already gorgeous images light ablaze with colours I was only capable of seeing while keeping Taehyung's eyes in view. Taehyung repeated countless times that it was magic until we revealed this to our parents, who were not surprised in the slightest to discover we were soulmates.
Without words, I knew he felt the same bewilderment looking into my eyes and the world he viewed. It was beautiful. Being with him had always granted me unlimited access to that beauty and happiness.
However, Taehyung had been all I'd ever known. Part of it seemed too good to be true that my lifelong childhood friend was my soulmate. It was true that deep down, part of me had always looked at him with an affectionate gaze, but part of me wasn't ready to delve into a full soulmate bond with him. There wasn't anything wrong with our relationship. We'd moved in together. But just something felt incomplete within me like that night sky had all the stars, but the clouds covered the moon. Maybe as time passed, the feeling would fade, I tried to convince myself.
Maybe whatever was holding me back was the fear of losing my independence, that snarky attitude that put up a fight to stand my ground. I was afraid of being changed by this soulmate bond. Even though Taehyung would never ask me to change, I held onto this fear that the change within me would naturally occur. I wouldn't belong to myself anymore.
"Pass me my phone, and I'll order," Taehyung mumbled, his lips brushing against my ear. I couldn't help but giggle and flinch as his warm breath tickled the nape of my neck. I leaned forward, reaching out for the phone, then passed it over my shoulder into his large hands.
"I'll get started on unpacking!" I jumped up from the bed to find Tannie sulking at our door, trying to get inside. I pulled him up into my arms and buried my face into his soft tan fur, his tiny tongue eagerly licking at my face.
I began by distributing the boxes in their coordinated rooms. Everything had been labelled clearly when it had been packed. Then, Taehyung began the heavy lifting before his attention span got lost as he unpacked his office.
