"You know how to drive this thing?" "How hard can it be?" Aurora's eyes widened a bit until they entered the light again driving down hills over water pushing them. "Great, nobody's following. Now where's the Ferris wheel?" Ellie slowed the boat down before speeding up again going over a fence to a building, it was dark so Aurora turned her flashlight on looking forward around the building. Ellie drove through an old hallway then turned over another broken piece of fence into another hallway, furniture stacked against the walls creating a path for the rushing water. They turned again after leaving that hall through a hole in the wall.
"Great now what?" They came straight to a dead end, a gate in front of them. They got out of the boat stepping into the water, it rose just a little underneath Aurora's knee but stayed around Ellie's ankles. They walked to a staircase heading up and into a room with a large window. "There you are." Ellie whispered, pulling out her journal looking at the Ferris wheel in the distance. "It's closer than before, that's great progress." Aurora smiled finding that same old hopeful feeling in her stomach looking at the Ferris wheel. "I've never seen a Ferris wheel up close..." Aurora said leaning closer into the window feeling it's coldness on her face.
"Don't get too excited, you know why we're here." Aurora frowned again, looking down at the ground. "I know." The softness was clear to Ellie who felt bad as soon as the words left her lips. Aurora backed up from the window but didn't look up at Ellie, she only turned around and walked out of the room back down the stairs. She headed to the gate moving to the chains on the side. Aurora pulled up the gate while Ellie got back in the boat waiting for her. Aurora stopped pulling up the gate when the chair stopped. She turned back to the boat climbing in and sitting against the side. Ellie fixed her hood then started the engine again driving the boat out of the building and down the small slope of water turning down another large slope.
"Are you kidding me?" The engine stopped forcing Ellie to get up to restart it. Aurora fixed her hood and pulled her legs up hugging her knees. "You got it?" The engine then roared up again. "Yep." Ellie sat back down and continued on driving around a parking garage through the rain. Aurora could see the Ferris wheel getting closer giving her a feeling of uneasiness, she knew what would happen in there. Abby. They passed over old pieces of highway that had fallen through and broken in places. It wasn't a highway anymore, just a piece of road standing on a pillar.
"You said you've been on a boat before?" Ellie asked turning the boat into a tighter area of the water. "Yeah, me and Tommy in this really shitty boat. It started falling apart in the middle of the lake, we made it without falling under but as soon as we reached shore it fell apart. It was fun." She kept her tone straight earning a sad stare from Ellie. They turned a corner then the same strange whistles came from earlier then gunshots. Aurora got down laying on her back upholstering her gun. "Hold on I'll get us out of here. Wolves and Scars are fighting. Stay down, we're going through." Ellie floored it straight for the building, Aurora held on tight staying down on her back. Ellie flew through the building hitting a soldier with the boat, earning a few gunshots sent her way.
She pushed straight through the building into a hole in the wall straight into another building turning a corner. Aurora sat up again pulling her knees up to her chest keeping one hand on the edge of the boat to keep herself up. Ellie turned again coming to the end of the building entering the outside again. "What?" Ellie made it to the glass windows of an old arcade. "Put your head down." Aurora complied putting her forehead against her knees moving her hood over to cover her head. Ellie smashed into the window of the arcade entering the building. A gate blocked the exit. "Of course that'd be too easy." Ellie huffed stopping the boat.
Aurora didn't make a move though, her stomach hurt a dark feeling creeping up her sides. "Babe?" Aurora looked up passed her hood, "Yeah?" "You alright?" Aurora paused but nodded nonetheless looking back down to her knees. "I have a weird feeling." "Bad?" "I dunno." Ellie walked up to the chain pulling it up giving a clear view to the rushing water. "Holy crap." Aurora spoke looking at the water, it seemed angry, sloshing and moving in all directions. The storm got worse and worse by the second. "Just hold on, were almost there." Ellie said getting into the boat starting it up again. The Ferris wheel was closer than ever, and looked amazing with the lightning behind it making Aurora feel slightly better.
They turned onto a large street, the Ferris wheel just in front of them, the waves getting higher and higher scaring Aurora more and more. "I hate the water." Aurora muttered the whirl of the engine and the rough waves overpowering her voice. They then entered what looked like the open sea, the waves high but the shipping container was close. The engine then sputtered and gave out. Aurora looked at the engine then at Ellie with fear, the river from the other day creeping back into her mind. "Motherfucker!" Ellie got up trying her best to restart the engine as quickly as possible but nothing was working. A wave suddenly crashed into the boat knocking Ellie off and Aurora under into the sea.
Aurora struggled against the current flailing her arms to get back to the surface. She watched the boat sink under and fall deep down into the blue darkness of the sea. Finally she got control of herself pushing as hard as possible to the surface, her lungs beginning to burn from the wind being knocked out of her. She gasped reaching the air looking around for Ellie who came up behind her turning her around. "Fuck it! We can make it." Aurora nodded then they both pushed towards the large shipping container, it was just ahead of them but the waves didn't help.
Another came by pushing them both under, knocking them around. Ellie grabbed Aurora pulling her back to the surface allowing her to catch her breath. Aurora wasn't a strong swimmer, she pushed through swimming as fast as possible hearing another wave coming. It knocked her under but she gained control faster this time rising to the surface, she turned back seeing Ellie gasping for air after coming up. Finally Aurora made it to land climbing up on her hands and knees turning back to the water grabbing Ellie's arm. She pulled Ellie up while gasping for air trying to spit the water out of her mouth.
"C'mon we got this. We're close." Ellie stood up looking down at her girlfriend who struggled to breath through the water in her lungs. She could see the fear in her eyes. "C'mon." Ellie pulled her up looking into her eyes that were dark and tired. "We're close Rora. It's almost over, then we're going home. Farmhouse...remember?" "Okay...okay yeah." Aurora took in a few more deep breaths, gripping Ellie's hand as she walked up the path. She didn't want to let go, afraid of losing her in the rain. They fell down onto the sand walking past a large rock and an old shipwreck to another boat. Aurora was out of breath when they reached the boat that had crashed into the large deck, her lungs burning threatening to just give out.
They climbed up the deck of the boat to reach the wood pier. Aurora let go of Ellie's hand leaning up against a table jumping when another boom came from the thunder. Ellie looked over her then walked off looking up at the building. "Catch your breath, I'll look around." Aurora didn't argue taking in a few more deep breaths while Ellie checked the doors then came back over. "They're both locked. I think we can get in over there though, ready?" Aurora closed her eyes but nodded pushing off the table wiping some of the rain water from her face. They walked along the deck to another gate with a hole in the fence.
Ellie got down crawling through on her stomach to the other side. Aurora then got down crawling through across the wet deck reaching the other side using Ellie's hand to stand up. Her legs felt tired, like they didn't want to move anymore but she kept climbing up behind Ellie onto a roof area, one of the windows was broken leading into the aquarium.
"Alright we're in." Ellie spoke standing up looking around at the different fish tanks. "Yeah, we are." Aurora whispered leaning against a wall. "Just give me a second then, we're doing this."
