The Gate (Part 7)

"See?" Max's mom pulled Nikki out of her head. "Pretty."

Nikki smiled as Max rolled her eyes. The girls stayed silent until her mom left them to finish getting ready.

"It does look pretty," Nikki said, looking at Max's reflection. "I think braids suit you, don't you?"

"We'll see," Max said running her hand down the braid. "So, do you think Lucas will ask you to dance?"

"I don't know," Nikki shrugged. "Maybe."

"He will," Max smiled. "He's totally whipped for you."

Nikki scrunched up her eyebrows, confused by what Max had just said.

Max saw this and quickly brushed it off. "I'll explain it to you later. We gotta get going soon."

"Okay," Nikki said turning back to the mirror one last time. She looked at her sleeveless pink dress that showed the marks she had gotten from the demodog. She originally wanted a long sleeve dress to hide the marks but when she saw this dress she didn't care about how people could see her still healing wounds, she knew she would love to spend tonight in this dress.

"You okay?" Max asked, noticing the girl stare at the marks.

Nikki gave her a genuine smile. "Perfect."

"Holy shit, what happened to you?" Mike asked as Dustin walked up to the boys and Max.

"What do you mean, 'what happened'?" Dustin looked at them confused.

"Dude," Lucas said, gawking at the bird nest on top of Dustin's head.

"Your hair," Max said also looking at his hair.

"Is there a bird nesting in there?" Lucas asked, touching his hair to get a closer look.

"What do you mean, 'what's wrong with my hair'?" Dustin pushed him away. "There's no bird nesting in here, asshole. Okay? I worked hard."

Just then the music slowed down and people started grabbing partners to dance with.

"Mad max!" A boy named Caleb walked up to the group. "Wanna dance?"

Max nodded slightly as she and Caleb left the group and a heartbroken Dustin behind.

Dustin quickly regathered himself though as he turned to the group and pointed to a group of girls. "Wish me luck. And watched the magic of the hair."

He disappeared into the crowd of people as the group chuckled at the boy.

"Hey, Zombie Boy," a girl walked up to Will. "Do you want to dance?"

Will's gaze faltered as he looked at Lucas and Mike, who both urged him to accept.

Soon he walked off and left the two boys waiting for two superpowered girls to show up.

Nikki smiled as Hopper's trucker pulled up to the school entrance and El skipped happily out of the car and without a word grabbed her hand and dragged her inside the building.

"I waited for you, you're welcome," Nikki shook her head as the two girls walked into the gymnasium, letting their eyes go wide as they looked around.

Nikki felt El's hand leave hers as she must have seen Mike but Nikki was more focused on the crowd of people and how big it was.

"Wow. You look...wow," Lucas's voice tore her eyes away from the ocean of people to met with his brown eyes.

Nikki chuckled looking down at her dress before looking back up at him. "Thank you. You look wow, too."

Lucas gave her a goofy grin as he reached out his hand. "Do you...wanna, maybe, dance with me?"

Nikki smiled as she placed her hand inside of his and let him lead her to the crowd of people.

"I don't know how to really do this," Nikki said looking at everyone nervously.

"It's okay," Lucas's voice helped sooth her nerves. "I'll try to teach you what I know. Which isn't too much but at least it's something."

Nikki laughed as Lucas placed her hands around the back of his neck and place his hands on her hips. The pair began to sway to the music as they enjoyed each other's company.

"Nikki?" Lucas broke the silence between them.

"Yes?"

"I just wanted to say, I'm really glad your back," Lucas began. "When you were gone, I just felt awful because of how I treated you and I know I apologized before you disappeared, but it didn't seem like enough. I woke up every morning thinking to myself how I would be able to fix what I did, but I know couldn't change what I said. I had hoped that one day you would come back and I would be able to fix that rift between us. And now you're here. So, I just wanted to say, I like you. And I mean I really like you. And if it's okay, I want us to try to be, maybe...more than friends?"

Nikki felt her heart race with all of his words and she nodded. "I would like that."

Then before either of them knew it, Nikki leaned in and kissed him sweetly on the lips. After a few seconds, Nikki pulled away as Lucas felt his face warm up.

"I'm sorry," Nikki whispered.

Lucas smiled and shook his head. "Don't be."

Season 2 is done but just like the last book I am going to be posting some extra chapters here at the end just something for you guys to enjoy while I start working on book 3.
