"Thank God they didn't realize you were Prophet." Tony says. "That would have been a disaster."
The relief inside me drains as I suddenly remember the conversation I overheard before my kidnapping. I swallow, my anger bubbling inside me.
"Y/N? What's wrong?" Peter asks.
"I can't be a part of the Avengers anymore." I blurt.
"Wait, what? Why?" Sam asks.
"Oh, let's be honest. You guys don't want me on the team. You want to keep an eye on me. You know, so I don't become a weapon." I say, making eye contact with Tony.
"What lies did HYDRA tell you?" Steve asks, but I don't break the eye contact.
"No," Tony says. "She overheard our conversation."
"What?" Clint asks.
"You did, didn't you?" Tony asks. I nod, not making eye contact with anyone.
"What conversation?" Peter asks, only looking at me.
"The one where I called her dangerous." Tony says, unashamed. "And a weapon. But let's be honest, I wasn't the only one thinking it."
"Tony." Natasha warns.
"Oh, come on, Nat. Let's be transparent with her." Tony says, walking closer to me. "Yes, Y/N. You are dangerous. But that doesn't mean you aren't an asset to this team."
I sigh. "But I wouldn't be here if I wasn't a threat."
"Maybe," Tony agrees. "But you're here now. And we wouldn't be saving your ass if we didn't care about you."
"Y/N, we weren't trying to talk about you behind your back." Natasha says gently. "We're trying to keep you safe."
"Yeah, I think I can handle it." I say as the Quinjet lands. "I have to get home. My mom's probably really worried."
"You can't just leave, Y/N." Wanda says.
"At least finish this mission," Steve says. "Finish what we've started with HYDRA, and when we're done, you can go back to running around Queens. You never have to hear from us again." I sigh.
"Deal. But I'm going home now."
"I'll walk you." Peter says.
"Fine." I agree, walking out. "I'll see you guys tomorrow."
"Y/N, wait!" Peter exclaims, running after me. "You didn't mean all of those things, did you? About leaving the Avengers?"
"I absolutely meant it." I reply.
"What? Why?"
I stop in my tracks. "Peter, you don't know what it's like, okay? I mean, I've been spending basically my entire existence with these people for months. I've had dinner with them, I've gossiped with them, I've trusted them... to find out that I'm only here because I'm a threat, that I'm dangerous? It's like a knife in my back.
"I mean, you don't really get what it's like, and you're lucky. You don't have to think about the reason everyone would save you if you were kidnapped. I will spend the rest of my life not knowing if they came and got me because of me or because of this." I quickly make a blue ball of light in my hand and let is wisp away before anyone can see. "If you would have known, I would have-"
I stop, looking at the guilty expression on Peter's face. "Oh my God, you knew, didn't you? You knew they thought I was dangerous?" Peter shifts uncomfortably.
"I didn't really know, but Mr. Stark mentioned it one or two times-" I storm away from him, cutting him off. "But that was before I even knew you! Y/N, please!"
"I can't believe you, Peter."
"Y/N, stop it, you're lashing out."
"Lashing out? Lashing out?" I turn on my heels towards him. "Do you even care about me? At all? Why did you take me to that stupid dance anyways?"
His face softens. "You can't really believe I don't care about you."
"I can." I reply, my voice cold. "We're done here."
"What? What do you mean?"
"I mean we're done. We can keep working together, but the rooftop meetings, the make out sessions, the flirting, whatever this is, it ends now."
I don't mean it. I don't mean a word of it. I want him to stop me, to kiss me, to do anything. But he just sighs.
"Okay." And before I can take back what I said, he turns around and walks away.
