Replace the 'I'

Where to start

I struggled with writing my story, because there were to many I's in it. It can be very hard not to use the 'I' when your looking from the main character's perspective. The 'I' is used a lot for an action, feeling or emotion. Of course you can use the 'I', until there are too much that it gets bored. Variation of words in a story is important. You need to keep draw the attention of every sentence for the reader. 

Here are following 5 tips with examples that will hopefully help you out to avoid the 'I'.

1. Turn the phrase

Switch words, puzzle with them so they fit on the right place. flip the front of the sentence with the back. For example:

I turn off the water while the water sprays around

The water sprays around and I turn it off

2. Place another word for it, rearrange

1. I feel gratitude.

2. I'm happy and feel gratitude.

3. A feeling of gratitude goes through me.

4. The feeling of gratitude makes me realize...

As you can see, there are 4 ways how the sentence could start. There are endless possibilities to start the sentence with.

3. Place the 'I' after the comma
For example:

1. I walk over the grass, letting my dog out.

2. Walking over the grass, I let my dog out.

4. Look to other stories

The best way that will help you is to see how other stories where written. Almost everyone has a bookcase, or a pile of books. Take a book and look how they start with every sentence. Something that is very easy to do. Or go to the library if that isn't possible.

5. Look for synonyms

If you search for a word to fit in, you can search with "What can i say instead of..." or look for it in a dictionary. A great way to lengthen your sentence is to use a synonym later in the text. A synonym is a word with the same meaning. Water or aqua, for example.
