A golden yellow hue casts itself across the waves of the Pacific as the sun slowly burrows into the sky, sinking lower and lower into the vast water. A small teen watches the golden orb fall down further, his lazy eyes perking up as the massive rocks and golden waves of the coast recede into the distance, houses and buildings coming into view.

"This is Cannon Beach." His mother announces, driving past a welcoming road sign as she presses her foot against the brakes at a stoplight. "Our new home... isn't it absolutely beautiful?"

The boy judges the small town slowly, with all of the downtown area in his vision. The courthouse towers over shops with big windows, all crammed together in a charming fashion. It seems more like a tourist destination than a great place to live...

"It's... cute." The boy responds, a small grin forming on his face as he teases his mom.

"Come on! It's better than that." She protests, playing along as she turns down a small gravel road, away from the courthouse and the picture-perfect storefronts.

"Yeah, yeah. It's adorable, but where are we headed?" He asks, gesturing towards a neighborhood they were passing as the road gets more and more narrow.

"Your boarding school?" His mother answers, a look of dread falling onto his face. "I already told you this Nate, you can't afford to miss any more school. You're already behind on your classes."

"Only because we decided to move right in the middle of the first semester!" Nate counters, running a nervous hand through his hair as they turn down a private drive. They were surrounded by a forest, which only got more dense as they got further from the shore. It was almost suffocating. "That's not my fault."

"It's not." His mother agrees, "But you still have to make up a few weeks of work, do you not?" Nate sullenly nods, dreading the amount of work he'd have to do. "That's why I'm making you move into the school immediately. You'll need all the time you get."

"I suppose you're right..." Nate trails off, his eyes shifting curiously to the upcoming academy. It looked almost gothic, with its tall windows and ornate style. The shade from the trees made it much darker, only adding to its intimidating architecture.

"Well, here we are!" Nate's mother says, "Let's get you all settled in before it's too dark." She pulls into a parking space, popping the trunk open as the two of them start moving in.

Nate fixes the sheets across his new bed, tucking them in as his mom opens the dorm door with the last few boxes

Nate fixes the sheets across his new bed, tucking them in as his mom opens the dorm door with the last few boxes. "Here you are!" She grins, her eyes sparkling at him. He takes a deep breath, setting down the boxes before wrapping her son a big hug from behind.

Nate protests for a moment, but sinks into her affection. "What's wrong? You're living just down the road." He says, hearing his mom sniff.
