Who cares if it's paper, I thought.
After cleaning it off, I opened it.
Want to be my close friend?
-Joonie =)
Even though I wasn't a love confession, my heart still raced. My answer was obvious. I would tell him tomorrow at school.
Once we reached home, I got out and went to my room. I put on my white zip-up jacket, and some jeans. I walked into the kitchen excitedly.
After the picnic, I asked him to meet me at the park by our neighborhood. He came over once, but my dad said never again after Namjoon told him his hair reminded him of bats. My appa was afraid of bats. Very afraid.
"Eomma! I'm going to go to the park to meet Namjoon and And some friends again. Can I bring some of your hodu-gwaja for us to snack on?" I said, bringing my self onto the counter seat. She opened a container and put a few of the Korean walnut pastries into a small bento box and wrapped it in a red cloth she got when we went to visit family in Japan last month.
My mom was Japanese, and my dad was Korean. After my parents married, they had me and my siblings, we only moved once, but that was because our old home, in Osaka, was too crowded for three kids. The home we live in now is big enough for Seojun to drag his little dinosaur blanket around.
After she handed me the bento box of snacks, I jumped down and thanked her, then went out front to the garage. I found my appa in the garage again, working on a new birdhouse(we had many hanging already and so did our neighbors, it's his obsession) with Ara's older brother, Jihoon. Jihoon was in 7th grade. But he was super tall, for no reason.
"Appa, I'm going to the park again, I'll be back later," I say, getting my bike.
"Okay be safe!" He said. He turned to me and smiled.
"Hey, what you got there?" Jihoon said.
"Food," I say.
"Can I get some?" He said, holding out his hand.
"None for you," I said, riding away on my bike.
Once I reached the park, I locked up the bike, and looked for Namjoon.
I didn't see him, so I assumed he was on his way. I sat down on the swings, and waited for him. I heard a skateboard rolling towards the park, so I looked up.
My heart stopped... but not in a good way...
It was...
not Namjoon...
But Eunwoo...
He got off his skateboard and sat on the swing next to me. I heard other footsteps and then saw U-Jin and Namjoon running to us. My heart started beating again, but this time faster.
"Byeol! Hey, I hope you didn't wait long," he said, sitting down infront of me and Eunwoo. U-Jin went to drink from the water fountain.
"Hey Joonie, I didn't wait that long, my mom made us some gwaja!" I said holding up the bento box. Just as I opened it, Bomi and Haeun approached us, holding snacks and drinks.
"Are we having another picnic?" U-Jin said as he came back and sat down next to Joonie. We all laughed at his remark.
"Oppa, let me have your gwaja!" Bomi pouted to U-Jin. They were the youngest of our group. They seemed like siblings. Always bickering with one-another. But they always made up in the end.
I looked at our group and thought to when my mom said:
"This is my water family. They are my friends, but they are like my family. Like water, I need them to survive. They aren't blood, but they're still very needed,"
My mom always had a way with words.
"Byeol-ah, are you okay? You keep staring at Namjoon," Haeun said.
"Hey! I was not!" I said, reaching for her.
"Don't kill her," Namjoon said, leaning back onto his hands and laughing.
"Yeah what Namjoon said," Eunwoo said.
Kim Namjoon... Kim Namjoon... Kim Namjoon...
