Sequel to 'It Started With A Dare'

Chapter 1

Five years later

15 February 2021

BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ....

I heard a zooming noise next to my right ear, snapping me out of my daydream. I looked to my right and saw Olivia looking at me amusingly, holding her phone in her hand. "So Luke, what did you buy for your girlfriend yesterday?" she asked out of the blue. I rubbed my eyes and sighed, thinking about what I could answer to her question.

"I... don't have a girlfriend" I replied to her question and hoped she would notice that I wasn't going further about this subject. I tried to think about why she asked this, but I couldn't find the reason.

"Do you even know what day it was yesterday?" she asked and I knew she did this to make me feel stupid or something. I still don't understand girls nowadays, even though I'm almost 24 years old. "Yesterday was Sunday and I remember.." while looking at my watch "that I was still sleeping now at this very time" I replied, looking down at my watch again and confirming to myself that I indeed slept until 3:00 p.m.

Olivia sighed and rolled her eyes saying something like 'men'. She turned her back towards me and continued working on her computer.

This was the perfect time for me to grab my phone and see if I had any messages. I saw that Sam texted me to plan a boys-meeting tomorrow. Which meant that we had to talk in private about some things where no one could ever know about. We were supposed to have this kind of meetings every week with each other. We decided to call it a boys-meeting in our conversations with each other, so if anyone ever saw this, they wouldn't know what is was about. I will explain all of this later to you when that time will come. I texted Sam that I'm available tomorrow morning.

I put my phone on my desk next to my computer to keep an eye on it for when Sam replies.

Touching on the keys on my computer to bring it back to life, Olivia suddenly turned around again. I could see that her concentration was very low, even as mine.

"For the sake of your future girlfriend I will tell you this time what kind of day the 14th of February is" she said, while she smiled at me. She was really pretty and always very nice to me. But I just couldn't be with her or any woman from this city. "Okay that would be very nice of you" I replied.

"Yesterday was Valentine's Day!" she half-shouted at me. I popped my hand under my chin and looked at her confused. "Yeah.. so what?" I replied. She sighed and put her hand on her forehead. She peaked through her fingers and made eye contact with me. What attracted me most about her... No stop thoughts. I can't think about that. "I always thought you were a very romantic person, but this made these thoughts go as far away as possible" she said. I suddenly burst out of laughing and she joined me.

"What do you think about grabbing a coffee from across the street?" I asked her. "I will pay for making up to you about this Valentine thing" I added and she smiled at me. "You had me at coffee" she replied.

She stood up from her chair and grabbed her coat, which was a pink fluffy one. I also stood up to put on my coat when my phone buzzed on my desk. Sam had texted me saying that we meet tomorrow at our local meeting café at 10:00 a.m.

I put my phone in the pocket of my coat and walked to the door of our office. Being the gentleman I was, I held the door open for Olivia and she smiled at me. We walked through the hall of the building, I must say it's a really long hall. Our bosses had picked out the most far office from the whole building. Maybe because we annoyed them very much. I know that is not the reason at all. Because of our activities we needed a lot of silence and also privacy to do our jobs the best.

We walked down the stairs from the second floor to the first floor. While walking to the entrance we passed the offices of our colleagues. I nodded my head at them while Olivia waved at them. One of them peeked their head through the door and asked us what we were going to do.

(Fun fact: in the Netherlands we say that the first floor is the ground floor and the second floor is the first floor. I write this in English understanding so no need for you to think about this!)

"Hey... Sam" Olivia said and she turned around towards him. She twirled a strand of her hair around her finger while looking at him. I shook Sam's hand and gave him the kind of greeting which men do.

"We are heading out to the coffee bar across the street to find some motivation and concentration" I said to him and raised my eyebrows waiting for him to answer. "That sounds so good" he replied and I looked at Olivia who almost fainted. Okay not really of course, but I know she likes Sam so if we get anywhere near him she turns into a whole other person. Giggling and twirling her hair. I know the signs.

"You can come along with us?" I asked him and looked at Olivia who nodded her head, confirming she agrees. Sam hesitated for a moment and then replied: "I'm afraid I have to finish my task before 5:00 p.m. or else our boss comes after me". Olivia looked at me and then she said: "We can bring something for you".

"That would be so nice of you Olivia" Sam replied and I looked at them amusingly. "I know Luke would never ask something like this" he added and I punched his arm, knowing he was right. "What do you want us to bring for you?" Olivia asked and she added something before Sam could reply. "We are going to the small coffee bar and not the overpriced worldwide known coffee bar".

"Good to know, I would like a flat white please" Sam said and he went to get his wallet from his pocket. "At least let me pay for you because you're getting me a drink" he said, handing Olivia some cash. "Well actually Luke is paying because he forgot what day it was yesterday" Olivia said and she softly punched my arm.

"Wait... what day was it yesterday?" Sam asked, scratching his head and looking questioningly. Olivia looked not happy at all at the both of us. "Okay fine, you both pay me the rest of the week coffee" she said and we couldn't help but agree with that.
