I open my eyes and sit up slowly, hissing at the pain in my back. I glance around, not recognizing where I am. Then it all comes back to me, and I remember; I'm in America. I swing my legs over the side of the bed and stand up. Then I walk over to my duffle bag and grab my iPod. I check the time. It's 4:15 in the afternoon. I slip my iPod and phone into my pockets, and then walk out of my room. I hear music coming from Ryan's room, so I open the door and walk in. Of course, he's blasting The Word Alive at 4 in the afternoon. I close the door behind me, and Ryan looks up from where he's sitting on his bed. He grins and pauses the song.
"Well, look who's up already. You never can sleep more than 4 or 5 hours hmm?" He asks cheekily. I roll my eyes.
"Shove off Ryan. You know I can't, it's not like I have a say in the matter." I reply, leaning against the door. He nods.
"Honestly though, what's it like, having insomnia?" He asks curiously. I chuckle. Of course that's what he wants to know.
"I dunno. I guess it's like having an alarm clock that only you can hear, only you don't really hear anything, your body, or brain just won't let you sleep. And the type of insomnia I have doesn't let me get many hours of sleep when I do manage to pass out. But you get used to it." I try and explain. He cocks his head.
"How can you get used to not sleeping? I like sleep WAYYY too much to get used to that." He exclaims. I point at him.
"That's the thing. You know what it's like to sleep for 8 or more hours. I've never slept longer than 5 hours, so there's nothing for me to miss or wish I could do again. Believe me, it was a problem when I was a kid, but now I'm more than used to it." I elaborate, shrugging. He nods.
"Well, now that you're up, you wanna go drive around? Darla's going to be up here soon to try and get us to start unpacking." He replies. I nod and stand up straight.
Alright, I'll meet you at the car?" I ask. He nods, and I leave the room, closing the door behind me. As soon as I step out of the room, I can hear Gabriel yelling at Darla, and I can hear Jenny whining at father. I roll my eyes and walk back into my room. I grab my messanger bag and empty it, then I put some money, my phone, a pair of earphones and a hair tie in it. Then I throw it over my shoulder and walk out to the foot of the stairs and grab a box labelled 'Skating'. I carry it to my room, then open it and pull out my favorite board and Ryan's favorite board. I open my door, but I hear Darla and father getting after Gabriel and Jenny, even though they'll be back at it soon enough. I do NOT want to deal with that, so I close my door and cross the room. Then I open the French doors leading to the balcony, and step out. I see that there is a way down using the gate-thing that vines grow on. I've never known what they're called, but who cares. I carefully toss the boards onto the grass below, and then make sure my bag won't fall. As I check that Darla isn't outside, I feel eyes on me. I glance around, but I don't see anyone looking this way. I do see that the house next door has a balcony too, and the French doors are open, but I shrug it off. I climb over the railing and crawl down the vine-grower-thing. I drop down and straighten up, still feeling eyes on me. I ignore it and pick up the boards, carrying them to my Mustang convertible and putting them in the back seat. While I'm leaning over the door to hide my bad under the seat, I look towards the neighbors house, and see two guys standing in the shadows of the French doors. They don't seem menacing or threatening, so I simply stand back up and walk over to the vine-gates and carefully climb back up. I walk into Ryan's room, and he stands up.
"Ready? We'll have to sneak out, Darla and father are lecturing again." I say. He nods, and I lead the way back to my balcony. I climb down first, and then Ryan climbs after me. We walk to the car, and he sees the boards. He grins.
"I guess we're gonna find a skate park." He drawls. I grin back.
"Or, we could go downtown and then park the car and skate around for a while." I retort. He nods.
