I know your thoughts, oh you bout it, bout it

You're a big girl and It's your world..

And I'mma let you do it how you wanna

Girl, now ride wit it, ride wit it

"Open the fucking door, dumbass!" I yelled, slamming my fists on the door. I could hear the music and the bass come through his apartment. Does he think I'm stupid? "Oh holy Mary." I huffed, tired of trying. I turned around and leaned onto the door while rolling my eyes at Jesse's music. I heard the sound of locks and quickly got off of the door and turned around, facing it. The door opened and the music became louder. A strong smell of weed invaded my nostrils.

"Indigo!" he yelled as he opened his arms to come hug me. "Hi, Jesse." I said, showing my disgust. He rolled his eyes and pulled me into his arms as he hugged me tightly. I chuckled. "Next time when you ask me to come over, fix the volume of that shit." I said as I pointed to his speakers. "Oh, man. I was getting ready so I had to put on some music and blast it, you know." He said. "No excuse." I responded, sitting down on his couch and putting my feet on the marble table that was in the middle of his living room.

"Robyn, come on." He huffed as he looked at me. He did this often, when he was serious or mad he called me by my first name. Otherwise, it was my middle name, Indigo. "What? My shoes are clean." I said as I watched my black suede boots. He rolled his eyes and disappeared in one of the rooms. I watched around the place and unconsciously bopped my head to the beat. "Why you always gotta be dressed in black, though?" Jesse's voice spoke. I looked up at him. He wore a white blouse with dark grey jeans and black Timberlands. "'Cause I feel like it." I answered, diverting my eyes to the Buddha statue. "You feel like wearing black?" he asked again. I grew irritated. I rolled my eyes and looked at him. "Yea, I feel like wearing black. What? Ain't that good enough for whatever you want to do?" I asked. He held his hands up in defense. "Wasn't trying to get you mad, girl. Calm down , I like it though." He spoke as he turned the volume of the speaker down. Thank God, I thought. "Where are we going anyways?" I asked after a while, watching my boots. "Oh," he said as he turned his attention to me. "We're going to a hangout party, my bro's. Pro Era, you know them?" he asked. I thought for a second. "I mean, I can vaguely remember seeing that name somewhere on the internet but no, who are they? And what is a hangout party exactly?" I asked.

He chuckled as he put on his jacket. "They're a collective from Flatbush. Like twelve kids or so. I'll introduce you to them. They make hip hop music, like raw ass music. Their shit is dope as fuck, I'll get you to listen to their mixtape one day. And we're just going to hang out, with some food and music." He explained. I raised my eyebrows. "And you lookin' like you're headed to a family cookout?" I said. "Swear to God, Robyn. Can't you ever say something nice?" he muttered. "I'm your best friend for like 9 years, Jesse. Don't expect me to be like an angel, now." I responded as I got up and buttoned up my coat. He shrugged, "That's true." We exited the place and went our way.

The car ride was full of music, humming-alongs and hardcore rapping. We got out of the car and I could hear the music from the building. I tucked my camera back in my bag. I loved photography, it was a hobby of mines. When my mother and I moved to Brooklyn, I couldn't stop taking pictures of the buildings and people. It was all so different from Long Beach, the atmosphere was so alive and different. There's an obvious difference between New York and California. I had to adjust to the strong accents they had, most of the time I couldn't understand shit but thanks to Jesse, I'd picked up on it and actually had a light accent myself after all these years. Jesse was the guy that was extremely cool and popular in high school. I wasn't really a talker, I'd rather watch the people and study them. Their attitudes, their moves, their expressions. Someone would always find me staring out of the windows, looking at the trees, the clouds and so on. One day, I was taking pictures of the bathroom doors that were written on completely with the most creative things ever. It literally lightened up my mood instantly. Jesse came out of the bathroom and thought I was taking a picture of him. When I explained him what I was doing, he immediately chimed in on how he loved photography and that's how we bonded and became the best friends ever. He supported me through a lot, especially when my mom passed due to cancer. It was a horrible time, I had no idea where I had to go or what I had to do. The only family I had left in America was my cousin Lilah who lived with me. Jesse was the one to pick me up from the ground and help me get through it. He was the one that fixed my cousin to live with me in my apartment. I couldn't believe it and since that moment, I knew we were bonded to each other forever. It was like me and him share a spiritual chord, he was like my blood brother from the beginning. I can't imagine life without Jesse by my side. My mind drifted to the time we both sat at my mother's deathbed..
